Yeah... I think daily WTF podcasts would go over a lot another round of MFD.

Fist!!!1!One!Eff!1st!!!Small thin pencil in Kanji. I'd prefer the return of MFD to a soggy round of podcasts with bloggers who are past their prime. (You didn't think that bloggers can be past their prime? Then review the history of fanzines.) If Alex has a great radio voice, I'm pleased. Best used for encouraging developers to eat their own dogfood, I'd suggest. Or otherwise for comforting hobos who have no choice. I'll probably tune in for the "Best of" series in 2020, but, otherwise, what's the point? I mean, have they invented the virtual loofah yet? If not, all three of you are going to have to hire an awful lot of geishas. And where's the profit in that? |

Personally, I'd like to see the podcasts done in Ogg Vorbis instead of MP3. http://www.xiph.org has a lot of information on it.

Irrelevant? Hardly. Xiph have a codec designed especially for voice compression (speex). Plus not every can use MP3s due to patents - I'd say it was a completely relevant suggestion.
Anyway - woo for a fellow E71 user. Had mine for a couple of months now (traded up from the E61 - so glad I did!) and I wouldn't be without it. |

I'm warning you guys. "Irrelevant" or not, I'm gonna store the handles of "unregistered" commenters who think that this is a good idea in an un-normalised database with an Access front-end consisting of nothing but Big Buttons. And if you think this is an idle threat, think again. You're visible right now on a site dedicated to fanboys!. Yes, nurse, I'll come quietly. Then I'm going to posse up my colleagues and chase you down and tickle your naughty bits with a giraffe's pinkie (not the one with the engagement ring; the other one) until you admit that this Podcast thing is an offense against decency. I'm cruel, but giraffe-obsessed. Podcast with failed self-promoting journos? Pfft. |

A podcast would be cool, and you have a good radio voice Alex.
|
|
I don't think a DailyWTF podcast would work well. It would be like trying to do a regular comedy routine. It might be good once in a while, but not regularly.
Instead, I recommend you team up with some daily coding news podcast; if /. did a podcast, that would be a good one. Then, you would do your best Paul Harvey imitation and tell "The rest... of the story" near the end or something. Except the story is a WTF and you would tell all of it, not just "the rest". |

I'd love a WTF podcast! Esp one that explains all the horror in the languages that I don't speak. :-) Doesn't have to be daily, maybe weekly or monthly? And iTunes would be great!

Every time I've tried VLC it has proven to be crash prone and buggy. I simply cannot fathom what makes it so good. Not that there seems to be much in the way of media players that actually do a good job of playing media, rather than all kinds of unnecessary "features". |

In my experience, VLC crashes regularly if you have the playlist open (on windows XP), but otherwise it works well, and I use it for most media.

The real WTF is that there isn't a stable version of Amarok for Windows yet.

I've been using VLC as a media player for everything WMP can't play on my system - but I dislike the UI of the new versions which led me to SMPlayer.
BUT: If there is audio to download I prefer MP3 as it plays on almost everything out of the box. |

I'm not really going for the whole TDWTF podcast thing. Maybe as a rare treat but I'd rather not see the site transition that way - it is a written media site and that's how most people like it (OK, that's how I like it, but maybe there are others who would agree).
As for the OGG commenter, just get the hell out right now. Yes, it's an open format and yes, it's an extremely good audio compression algorithm. But the idea of supporting this over the ubiquitous and entirely standard MP3 format is ridiculous. The fact that MP3 is a patented algorithm does not make it inferior to the open source offering; the simple fact of the matter is that the "best" algortihm in real terms is the one with the most support - and that is obviously MP3. |
|
Podcasts are just an annoying medium with too many limitations. Written is always far better. Those who want a podcast should get a screen reader or TTS service. Something that converts accessible text into something that suits them rather than forcing the rest of us to suffer their format.

Yes but let's be honest, Windows Media Player barely supports anything by default. If you don't know how to use DirectShow codecs then you shouldn't be using Media Player in the first place. Without them, it is little more that an impotent MP3 player with support for all your favourite shitty and obsolete Microsoft proprietary formats (WMA, WMV, ASF - may they all burn in hell). |

You make a good point about speex - though then it's not Ogg Vorbis. But have you ever met anyone who won't use mp3 because of the patents? mplayer run from the command line. I use Linux, and I virtually never find anything that won't play in one of mplayer or VLC. My two cents: MP3 _and_ a patent-free codec (Vorbis, Speex, whatever). Let the user choose. And then you can see just how many people give a damn by counting how many times the non-mp3 one is downloaded. I'll bet not many. |
|
Podcasts with CodeSOD would be awesome!
|
|
For those wittering about not using Media Player because of lack of support and being stuck with buggy crash-prone VLC:
Just download the free codec pack from http://shark007.net and Media Player will play just about anything. |

Not to hijack Alex's podcast announcement (which I can't even listen to because of work's stupid firewall), but due to "popular" demand, here's a quickie *official* MFD I did in about 10 minutes with MS Paint and my graphics tablet. A little sucky, but isn't that the point? ;-) Enjoy!

For some reason, the podcast MP3 upsets mp3cue and causes it to crash. However, Dr Watson only halts the mp3cue-related thread in Winamp, leaving Winamp merrily playing away, with a Dr Watson "Winamp is dead" dialog box sitting on the screen. I can't interact with Winamp any more, but this is the first time I've had it continue playing indefinitely while officially crashed.
(I thought that the fault was due to faulty ID3 tags, but Mp3tag shows the file as being untagged -- a sin unto itself -- so who knows?) |
