How is xlsx pronounced? Whatever I try my tongue just ends up all skewed.

  • (cs)

The WTF is nosey people who think it's their duty and moral obligation to pipe up if someone says something that could in the least bit be construed as offensive.

This reminds me of the whole Adria Richards debacle: For those not aware there was a Python convention where two guys were talking and joking about "big dongles" and "forking that repository". A tech evangelist named Adria Richards was seated somewhere in front of them and overheard these jokes, got offended, and went and posted a picture of the guys on Twitter complaining about sexism. Ultimately one of the men was fired by his employer and there was a huge internet shitstorm, and Adria herself got fired for the whole thing later on.

The WTF in the story is that the guy was about to be thrown out of the coffee shop (an anonymized Starbucks?) because some old ladies sitting nearby happened to overhear him say "ex-ell-ess-ex", thought he was saying "excellent sex" and complained about being offended instead of just ignoring it because it was none of their damn business.

TRWTF is your boss pushing to get some non-transcendent task done while the world is coming to an end. She might have to get her shit together and think of what's important during a crisis: saving your life or sending some excel files to a guy reaching his house roof.

Not necessarily... just because I (and probably you) enjoy excellent sex (I don't know, perhaps you don't), it doesn't mean I want to hear you talking about it in a coffee shop. I imagine some of the other jargon could have sounded somewhat like too much information... last week I was helping a collegue with some SQL on a DB of media, when I noticed that all the rows returned from her query were for adult videos. Suddenly, a lot of the SQL sounded like double-entendres.

It was later acknowledged publicly to be not acceptable in that context by at least one of the men. Haven't you read Stupid White Men? White men are the cause of all the world's problems!

OK, no seriously, heterosexual white men are playing on easy. If you're a white man, and you're in a room full of white men like you (like you're all geeks), it's a lot easier to say, "hey, yeah that, what you just said, not appropriate". But if you're a women, let alone a black women, then it can be harder.

If Ms Richards had have turned around and said, "not appropriate", for all she knew, she could have been verbally abused. Why should she have had to potentially put up with that?

A solution for a white man, "just turn around and say, 'quit it'" is not always the best solution for anyone else. And not all white men recognize this, no matter how bright they might be. (The same applies for anyone in a position of privilege. It is context dependent.)

What does skin color have to do with it?

What type of horseshit is this? Look, I don't care if you're white, black purple, green or gray. If you aren't involved in a conversation, and someone just happens to say something offensive within earshot but not to you directly, the correct behavior is to man the hell up and ignore it, not complain or take pictures of the people and try to name-and-shame.

What Adria Richards did was not right, in any way shape or form. It would have been a different story entirely if the two people were talking to her directly and she felt offended, in which case she should have said that she didn't like that. Instead, she took it upon herself to go on some moral crusade for women's rights, take a picture and start tweeting to shame the two people.

In the story here we have a similar parallel. The two little old ladies overheard "ex-ell-es-ex" and got offended despite the fact the person was not talking to them, about them, or anything related with them. In other words, people can't mind their own f'n business.

Keep in mind that Adria also compared herself to Joan of Arc and said some rubbish about it being impossible to be racist against whites, because whites are the oppressor. So yeah she's basically just someone who uses their minority status to demand preferential treatment and cry racism/sexism/homophobia/antisemitism when they don't get it.
