What's going on with the telephone one? It makes no sense to me, should I be able to read that text?

It's been a long week, so sorry if this is a dumb question.

As for Firebug, all you need to do is press F12 and you'll know soon enough as to whether it's installed or not.

TRWTF of course is UCSD: they've got a picture of some guy with a very nasty-looking piece of metal in his hand, with a view, apparently, to throwing it. That is very dangerous -- he'll have someone's eye out if he's not careful. We should not be encouraging our youth to participating in such appallingly unsafe practices. Can't they change it to a picture of a decorously-dressed lady playing the piano, or something?

I was wondering the same. Maybe it's because the things in the yellow boxes look like xml (is that not enough). Or it's the emergency exit plan on the bottom right corner which looks so confusing that most people will be incinerated before understanding it.

For the uninitiated the telephone error is the default error screen for a .net website. Setting custom errors to Off would give a detailed error as the error screen simply says theres been an error.

That's King Triton, the father of Ariel, the little mermaid, if I'm not too wrong. Probably an important sponsor of UCSD and definitely not the sort of person you would want to rile by replacing his picture with that of some lass playing the piano.

Ah, you might have got me wrong there. That was meant as a joke. The bloke on UCSD's website is probably Triton, son of Poseidon, father of Pallas (given that the name of the system seems to be "Triton" ("My Tritonlink")), but definitely not the Disney character, as a Google image search will reveal to you. The bloke on the web page looks like something Arielle might run away with, whereas the Disney character definitely looks a more (grand)fatherly.

I didn't insinuate she would run away with her grandfather - I said she might with the handsome bloke on UCSD's website. But looking of Disney pictures of King Triton and Arielle, one can not help but think that he probably became father of Arielle rather late in his life.

Let's just agree that on the phone surpasses WTF-ery into true horror.

I mean sure, it's bad if data/error messages don't display, monitor sizes are wrong in a list, and all the other errors we've seen over the years.

But no beer and wings? Definition of tragedy.

At least previous versions of Windows would actually give you an error message, even if it wasn't comprehensible for non-technical people.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the trend towards less informative error messages disturbing? In the Firefox one "cannot modify the needed file" really begs the question of what the "needed file" is. Was it too hard for them to provide a filename, at least?

Yeah I don't like the "dumbed down" error messages. I'm working with SharePoint 2013 now and the default error message if there's an error is literally, "Sorry, something went wrong" with a link for a correlation ID for admins. Come on, at least tell me what went wrong so I know where to start, without having to pull all the logs.

For cygwin the services are not standard windows services. You will need to check the appropriate logs to determine the cause. You are looking at a generic windows error code otherwise.

Living across the street from UCSD (my fiancee is about to defend her thesis there), I can tell you that there are many WTFs at the school. Number one being that it's mostly the kids of rich Asians from Los Angeles/Orange County that have overly-demanding parents, so pretty much every kid in that school cheats.

Having the Triton as their mascot ranks as only the top 11th or 12th WTF there.

The Real WTF with the .NET error is not having a custom error page enabled for a production system.

    foo:

It has instructions on how to turn off the generic message and show the actual error. It says which config XML nodes to edit.

When an error happens, the user can potentially do three things: 1. Accept that it doesn't work. 2. Call for help. 3. Fix the problem themselves. It depends on the error and capabilities of the user which one to do.

When designing an error message, you need to decide what you want to achieve. "Cannot modify the needed file" is neither here nor there. It confuses the user who cannot fix the problem himself, and it doesn't help anyone who tries to fix the problem.

  • (cs)

The problem in Firefox should be easy to debug with Firebug.

The more information is in a message, the more possible it is for a tech-savvy end user to play (which can actually be a bad thing when the user who thinks he's tech savvy plays). When users can find and potentially fix problems, it means there's less support that can be billed back, because people start solving things themselves. The point of dumbin g down messages, then, is 2 fold:

    1. Increase suppport revenue by making it harder to support in-house
    2. Require that people actually understand whart's going on if they're going to fiddle

One of the frustrations is support is that people think they understand every problem they encounter - and the more information you give them, the more they think they can diagnose it - and (even though I have a bad habit of doing it) it really isn't helpful when the user reporting the problem speculates on the underlying issue - other than to mention when they've seen a similar issue.

"The service did not report an error."

The RWTF is attributing a 'net' command message to the Cygwin environment. I mean ... really?!?!? Who's running this forum anyway?
