And who knew IMBD hates old people?

Everyone knows that people over the age of 100 don't have valid opinions... Therefore IMDb is not a WTF.

Well, we all enjoy the mistakes of the aging programmer sometimes more so than the rookie mistakes. Personally...I like to read about them old folks who think writing code on punch cards is still a valid way to program.

Indeed, any software that uses a character set that has no corresponding glyphs in the font that's being used to display the text will look like that.

I'm an old fart. They make good "cocktail napkins" (scribble cards) as they're much sturdier than actual cocktail napkins. And bookmarks. Plus, they give you that Super Nerd look! :-)

As for punching code on them, that's what you hire GIRLS for :-) You just turn in a coding form.

Damn, I'm glad I missed that by a hair.

Why is the IMDB image a WTF? So they've chosen to exclude really really old people from their target audience, what's the big deal? Is there a huge amount of 107 year olds that really really need to register with IMDB? Now if this was the registration form for social security, medicare, AARP or any of those old people programs, it'll be a legitimate WTF.

Not much on this website is "worse than failure".... this isn't even a failure. its not even pitiful really, and slightly borders on poor programming (who cares about IMDB anyway? or old people?)

The CS doesn't strike me as a WTF. Rather, it strikes me as a case of the wrong language. The system doesn't have the fonts installed to display it.

The IMDB sounds like a reasonableness check on the data that's a little too strict. A poor choice but not really a WTF.

My only guess for the reason IMDB does not allow 107 year olds is the database. I forget what RDBMS store dates in 2-digit formats, but the ones that do, typically go from 1930-1940 to 2030-2040 so that they store a 100 year window, which would be a good enough reasoning for not allowing a 107 year old on IMDB.

Or, since they're storing birth years, maybe some short-sighted DBA or programmer decided that they only needed a window of time 100 years into the past, making 1907 and earlier invalid as options. Computer memory has not been that valuable for a long time though so it is still definitely a WTF.

Anyone want to take a crack at decoding the email address?

We know it ends in ".dk", based on the visible "k" in the "confirm" box and the dropdown.

It also contains a "g" and a "j".

Given that the font is unantialiased 10pt Arial, it should be possible to reconstruct the original email address...

(Otherwise known as, why you should always blank out private information in screenshots and NOT blur it or pixelate it - enough information remains to reconstruct the original.)

So if you signed up at 95 years old, in five years it might suddenly wrap around and see you as 0 years old? =p

Meh, spam bots can't even unobfuscate addresses with random uppercase words (NOSPAM, BLOCKME, etc) or symbol-to-word conversions. Deconvolution's a bit harder than OCR, anyway - by a few orders of magnitude.

Do you work for some of those... er... beautiful companies... who keep registering domain names and try to sell it?
Or one who stoically keep on hacking google's search results to show nothing but useless and annoying ads?

both things perhaps?

If that's the case, please know that i officially hate you, and i hope you suffer, eventually diying in a lot of pain with blood, worms, and that kind of stuff. I wish you the worst. Please, make an effort and try to die.

Cheers, and keep the good job.

So WTF does IMDB need to know how old you claim to be? Most likely because the douchebags on Capitol Hill are protecting the children by requiring them to lie about their age when registering on websites.

But to the main point. IMDB used to be cool. But *any* website that has a box to "verify your email address* is obviously under the control of retarded dipshits. I don't know where this stupid idea got started, but it sure spread like herpes in a Viagra factory.

Please, find somebody who thinks this makes any sense. Get them to post an explanation. I would like to mock them to their virtual face.

The clues you describe come not from using pixelation to block out the original, but the fact that she missed a few bits when doing so. If she'd blacked out the same area instead, you'd be able to tell the same thing. Tell me what you can make out from the actual pixelated part and I'll be impressed.
