Comment On Just-In-Time Business Cards

As you may have noticed, I am a big fan of souvenirs, trinkets, and tchotchkes. And I know I'm not alone. Whenever I go to a conference, at least half of my fellow attendees join me in the pursuit for as much free stuff as possible. [expand full text]

What's funnier is the presence of a WTF in the Inedo site - it requires two lines in the address field to ship you the cards, regardless of the need for a second line.

When a coworker of mine left, I inherited his desk and found a box of his business cards. When I need some business cards, I simple take some of his, cross his name out and put mine.

American companies are cheapskating or what?
I have got dozens of boxes of business cards with our company logo and my name on it. If I need more, I need to dial extension and ask for more. More will be provided, no questions asked.

There should be a check box for "My business cards are out of date." Happens to us students a lot -- I once ordered 500 business cards from a promotional offer, and had only given 10 or 20 of them out when my dad kicked me out of the house where I was spending my summers. (He later backed down, but by then I'd decided I *wanted* to move. Then there was the internship in California....)

Last time my previous employer handed out business cards, it was followed by a move to a new office, and all the phone numbers changed. Cue industry meeting where all the tech people from this Fortune 100 company are passing out cards with the phone number crossed out and rewritten by hand.

I just happened to get a used desk with some business cards in it. When I need them, I just cross out the name, address, phone, e-mail, logo and whiteout the background color, then rewrite with my name, address, phone, e-mail and redraw the background with a highlighter. I made up some stickers with our logo to stick on them. Also, the size is too big so I also trim an edge with some scissors.

In the US we can live without Business Cards. They aren't that important, except to enter into fishbowl contests. In other parts of the world showing up to any business function without cards is like showing up on a date without genitalia. In the US, except for Christian Bale, we don't measure ourselves by the quality of our cards.

(*) With real details and everything! That's the first time I've filled out a webform with real information in aaaaaaages! Kinda important if you're hoping to receive something through the post though... in fact now I come to think of it, last time I used my real info on the net was for the free MFD stickers....

They're perfect for scoring swag at conferences, entering random fishbowl drawings

If the card has fake info on it, how do you enter the card for random fishbowl drawings and expect to win?

(Yes, I can think of some kludgy ways around this predicament.)

This reminds me once of when I was asked about the importance of my position as the (Non-IT-type) Security Supervisor at at a NanoTech complex and I summed it up as "Important enough to blame when things go wrong, but not important enough to have business cards."

This prompted a bit of Office Space web crawling and I found a real company called Initech that's using the name and logo, but not in an ironic way.

Hey, that's not bad. One place I worked had "generic" company business cards for "unimportant" people, and you just penciled your name wherever you could find room. At least these have a "name" slot.
