Comment On May The Form Be With You

Not to be outdone by British Airways' variety of 206 different titles, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens wanted to make sure they covered everyone on their donation form's dropdown box. Who would have thought that Sith Lords have a soft spot for botany? [expand full text]

I've seen worse. The Hamilton County (TN) school system has a page to look up what school your child is zoned for. I guess they didn't want to deal with misspellings, so they have a combobox with every street loaded. Last time I checked they had not turned off viewstate for the control, so the page is over 400 KB (200 KB for the combobox and another 200 KB for the viewstate).

What if my title is "His Holiness"? Or, better, perhaps "His Assholiness"?

WTF?! I don't think the ABG is the one that went that insane with the titles. It looks like they outsourced the donation part to Blackbaud.

Even so, some of those titles aren't even legitimate. Geez.

I'm going to enter that as my title on the next form I complete.

Edit:
Damn, now I can't donate. My new title isn't in the list.

You know at first I was thinking that maybe you could enter your own title and it would be added later so I tried. Nope, all these titles really have been added by someone on the inside.

I'm guessing this is a field which started off as freeform text and was changed to a combo-box, without cleaning up existing DB entries. We have a "feature" that in our timesheet system at work, which is why there are task descriptions like "invidulating" (invigilating ... which is there as well) and "browsing internet" :-)

[PS: captcha is "muhahaha", so I guess I should've put "Evil Overlord" as my title :-D]

I wonder if that was just someone playing around in the dev environment to see if something works, and then not getting rid of the bogus ones in production.

I'm seriously considering the title "Colonel" now though...has a nice Southern plantationy ring to it.

It's only a pity that your state is a required field and it only contains US states making it impossible to fill in this form.

Companies really need to learn to handle non local submissions. I recall reading that the Symantec order page requires a 5 digit postal code making it impossible to buy Norton from the Netherlands where either your form is rejected or your packet is delivered to the wrong address. Not that I mind very much not being able to buy Norton though.

What a beautiful list of titles. With the title of "'s" I'm guessing some form of sql injection that some Sith Lord used to insert his own titles.

No, this wasn't done on purpose. There are titles like ',s' and " 's". The most logical explanation was given above: they changed a free-form text field to a drop down and didn't check the database for these oddities..

It's not an error, but something that makes you say "WTF?!"

I'd say it's rather unlikely that it was done on purpose. It looks more like a "SELECT * FROM Titles" error where the Title field used to be a text box, and people started filling in whatever was most appropriate.

Why do they have Judge and Mrs. but not Judge and Mr.? That's just sexist.

CAPTCHA: RIAA, keeping Judges in business since, well, they don't and they're useless actually. Judges have more important things to worry about.

With the WebDev extension from firefox, you can easily change all the select boxes for text one.

Then, you can enter whatever title you want.

The "donate online" page shows this, to me:

You are attempting to access this Web server from a blocked IP address.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but evidence suggests the IP address may be associated with fraudulent activity. Unfortunately, in our efforts to counter online fraud, we may inadvertently reject legitimate IP addresses.

This mean that they trust Sith Lords but they don't trust me?

looks like the guy that put the form together was busy sniffing the plants at the Botanical Gardens.

_Of course_ sith lords would use this

How else would sith lords torture each other but to make false donations in each others' names to good causes?

Well, that and gluing Hello, Kitty stickers on the handles of each others light sabers. With superglue, naturally.

It looks like they may have fixed the live version, sorta. It still contains "Mr" and "Mr." as well as "Coach" and "The Late Secretary of State", but doesn't have Sith Lord or Shake and Bake...

From the "Someone there reads TDWTF" department...

2007-06-22 14:52 • by Random832
The current list is now "Admiral; Ambassador; Capt.; Cmdr.; Coach; Col.; Commissionner; Council Member; Dr.; Father; General; Governor; Judge; Lt.; Lt. Col.; Madam; Major; Major General; Master; Miss; Mr.; Mrs.; Ms.; President; Prof.; Rabbi; Senator; Sir; State Rep.; The Honorable; The Reverend; Rev.; Congressman; The Late Ambassador; The Late Secretary of State; Reverend Monsignor; Pastor; Consul General; Consul; Cantor; Mr; Reverend".

Though I don't suppose they get too many "The Late Secretary of State"s.

Anyone have the original full list?

Easy. Submit, but cancel, a 'real' one as "Mr." and capture the data sent to the webserver using the Firefox plugin "LiveHTTPHeaders". Then, go into live http headers, click on "Replay...", edit the "Mr." so it reads "The Emperor", apply the appropriate "Content-Length" attribute so that it reflects the changes, and click "Replay".

Smart money is that the application was checking to see if a title exists, and adds it if it doesn't. Then, it'd show up every time from then on as part of the database query.

The Widget of Sticky

P.S. I haven't tested this, for that would be wrong....

Hmm.. since they got rid of "Master Jedi" and "Sith Lord", I'm thinking of formally bringing a discrimination suit against the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Jedi are people, too!

Thank you for bringing this dark sided web prank to our attention. We are working quickly to resolve the issue. In the mean time, the Garden encourages those with nothing better to do to get away from their computers, come out to see us, and enjoy the most beautiful spot in the city.

Use the following bookmarklet:
javascript:var o=document.frmAddDonor.msDonorTitle.options,s=prompt();o[o.length]=new Option(s,s);void 0

The newly-added option will appear at the bottom of the list. DO NOT, however, set your title to "The Emperor", that title is mine alone.
