The "Maybe they"re looking for a cryptography specialist" mail is clearly just a base64 encoded text...

Just decoding the first line shows: "The Integratem Systems Group has an immediate"..

(It also contains a P tag a the start but I'm not able to post it.. always a lame error shows)

Make that: 'The Integrated Systems Group has an immediate'.. made a typo when typing in the base64 text..

I keep getting the blue bar showing me something updated, but when I click it nothing new shows up... guess what it probably is?

So, separate from the @aliceif's original notification, I'm getting notifications for updates in an invisible thread. That shouldn't happen methinks.

Update: Even with the topic now "tracked" because I replied, I still get the same thing: blue bar showing an update, clicking it just clears it without updating the topic list.

Yes, it did coincide with your post, since I got the quote notification at the same time.

Windows Live Writer generates the 'Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection' blog entry when you first associate it with your blog, or when you click the 'Update Theme' button in the ribbon or in the Blog Options dialog. It then scrapes the HTML from your blog site in order to present the post editor with a view of how your blog will actually look when you post. Once it's done that scrape, it deletes the post.

    Quite a WTF feature, really.

My guess is that the email was generated immediately that the dummy post was created. It probably would have gone by the time anyone clicked the link.

Time for a reply to today's article. Graeme said:

"I've been having a painful back and forth with Wicked Campers about the price of a quote. They finally agreed to the original price, but I don't think they were too happy with me about it. I wonder if they realise what they left in the subject line."

Where we see: RE: fucking annoying prick (emphasis by me).

Assuming normal email conversations, it looks like Selina replied to an email from Graeme in which he used the slightly impolite subject line.

Filed under: of course, it can also be Selina replying to an email from a colleague and just adding Graeme as second "to:"

That's why I suggested the conversation *might* have been the other way round:
    to: selina
    subject: fucking annoying prick
I don't want no stinkin rebate I want to pay the price of the original quote!

    to: John
    subject: RE: fucking annoying prick
We will give you the price at $79 a day...

But if course I don't think so. "I have emailed you through quote" sounds like someone forwarded an email received from a colleague by replying to it and just adding John's email adress as another "to:" without looking too closely on the subject line.

What's the problem with a cat in the server room? It keeps out the mice.

Server rooms should by default be equipped with a 19" kitty litter and some strategically placed spaces between servers. With a soft cushion, obviously.

  • (disco) in reply to faoileag

They certainly don't pull any linguistic punches (Wicked Campers). I visited www.wickedcampers.com and the home page reads:

"Konichiwa motherfuckers! We’re open for business in Tokyo baby!!! We’re turning Japanesey – so if you wanna hire a campervan in Japan, you know where to come doods! Campervan rental has never been so awesome – get your ass into a Wicked van in Japan today !!"

From the Specials on the USA site:

"Feel like drivin’ down The Strip with the stereo blazing, snorting coke off the dashboard and stalking b-grade celebrities from the safety of a camper?!!"

I suspect that "fucking annoying prick" -- they were just market testing a new slogan for the back of their vans.

I don't know. It's not up to their usual standards of classy:

Some examples of the slogans and pictures cited in complaints to the ASB about Wicked Campers include:

    • "Random Breast Testing Unit", with cartoonish representations of breasts (ASB Case 234/08);
    • "Men would notice women's brains more if they jiggled when they walked" (ASB Case 238/08);
    • "Lick my c*nt" (In Japanese script) (ASB Case 350/08);
    • "Women are like banks - once you withdraw you loose [sic] interest" (ASB Case 220/08).

Here are the first two lines of the "encrypted" email (which is obviously just Base64-encoded):

Re the frist one: "missed you" doesn't necessarily mean they think you didn't attend, just that they didn't speak with you (ok, perhaps on email it is a little more the former, but not a major WTF)

Re the Sceond one: Given wicked campers is wicked campers (who recently made the press with a slogan akin to "Inside every princess is a slut who wants to try it just once" (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/opinion/a-wave-of-disgust-is-growing-over-wicked-camper-vans-demeaning-slogans-writes-wendy-tuohy/story-fni0fhk1-1226992504284?nk=3303eb78d9a9b0b1384d97d692f3f5e0), I wouldn't be even slightly surprised if the subject is deliberately like that (sends the message they want, that's for sure)

Re the Thrid one: Base64 is not really cryptography....if they're looking for a cryptographer they'd do well to encrypt it....

Re the Frouth one: Yeah, ok, maybe a WTF.

Re the Ffith one: We got text, then we got a screen shot with much the same. And a mildly amusing WTF (although as the article hints, it sounds like normal Service Desk misunderstand and relay message (although I'd imagine a cat in a Server room could cause a little bit of damage, I suppose).

I think these are getting a bit bland. Or maybe I've seen everything now.

Among the other crimes of this infernal Discourse product is that it takes over the browser "Find" function. If you use ctrl-F, it intercepts it and opens its own broken search that doesn't find anything. If you go to the browser menu and select Find from there, you get the little search window, but after a second or two, Discourse closes the browser Find window to prevent you from searching any further.

I was going to leave a post, but I'm annoyed, so you get a complaint instead.

No, I'm one of those persons who likes things to actually work, rather than be a WTF. I want to look at how others discussed the cat before I enter my proposed post and I can't even do that.

Internet Explorer 8 (work system, mandatory browser):

Unfortunately, your browser is too old to work on this Discourse forum. Please upgrade your browser.

    (follow link)

What are the minimum browser requirements? Discourse is a JavaScript application designed for the next 10 years of the Internet, so the minimum web browser requirements are high:

•Internet Explorer 10+ •Google Chrome 24+ •Firefox 14+ •Safari 5.1+ We do officially support Internet Explorer 9, but some functionality will be unavoidably broken.

Firefox 31.0: Takes over the official browser find functionality to deliver its own broken functionality. I searched for cat: Firefox says there are 39 occurrences. It's my guess that the 39 is from the number of posts. Paging through them proceeds as follows; the window begins positioned at:

39 of 39: "Bonecrusher Loves His Cat Food" (click 5 times with no movement; it's basically insisting I click "Bonecrusher Loves His Cat Food") 11 of 39: "Yes, it did coincide with your post, since I got the quote notifiCATion at the same time." (click again) 21 of 39: "What's the problem with a CAT in the server room? It keeps out the mice." (click again) 34 of 39: "What's the problem with a CAT in the server room? It keeps out the mice." (click again) 36 of 39: "What's the problem with a CAT in the server room? It keeps out the mice." (click again) 36 of 39 (broken counter): "You've never cleaned cat hair out of a computer, have you?" (click again) 39 of 39: "cat" (one-word line) (click again) 39 of 39: "CATegory" (heading above "Bonecrusher" (click again) ...back to Bonecrusher.

Internet Explorer 11: THe browser window search is clearly subverted because it still shows the same "n / 39" counter. IE says in the header there are 11 matches, and paging through produces 11 stops. But in several cases, the stop locations cannot be seen., so that you have to click several times to "go to the next entry. The list of stops (which I did not take down) is not the same as for Firefox; among other things, it skips Bonecrusher entirely.

In other words, not only broken itself, but breaks the browser functionality. Deliberately.

  • (disco) in reply to CoyneTheDup

Looks like you've discovered that being stuck with ie8 sucks and that ctrl-F doesn't work with Discourse. Not to be a dickweed but I think everyone already knows those things around here...

  • (disco) in reply to CoyneTheDup

Hit Ctrl-F twice in Firefox and you get the browser search. However, before you can use that reliably make sure all posts of the thread have been loaded into the DOM.

    CoyneTheDup:
In other words, not only broken itself, but breaks the browser functionality. Deliberately.
Discourse breaks a lot of SOPs deliberately. Try selecting an url in a post because you want to copy & paste it...
