It's for a Schooner, which is about 20 ounces (IIRC), so four and a half is about right for a restaurant/bar.

Anyways, the comments are easily explainable. The beer was already made, so the server didn't want the bartender to make them again. S/he put the comment on the order, but it said "don't cook" rather than "don't make."

Usually, those comments don't appear on the customer's receipt, though, and therein lies the WTF.

VMWare ESX is licensed per pair of processors but that seems OK to me for some reason. Also isn't SQLServer licensing per-processor?

While I don't dispute the idiocy of licensing per processor, it's quite common.

The real WTF's in this case is that:
* It happily shows a value much higher than is sensible
* It refuses to run, instead of just only using the number of CPUs licensed (I'm not sure if this is common, but it's certainly something I would find frustrating and consider "incorrect" behaviour)

Unrelated to the quoted comment:
Also, that Mozilla screenshot... I spy the big X logo. What is it running on? Perhaps that's something to do with it freaking out...

Back when I worked fast food, if we got a request we didn't have a button for (like "Big Mac, no meat"), we'd use a button that wouldn't otherwise seem to apply to that item(like "No Tartar Sauce"), so the cook would have to ask what you meant.

Probably what's going on here. But no, it shouldn't appear on the customer's receipt.

Yep, a WTF, although in the opposite direction if you're sitting here in London. A beer in a pub will set you back £3.50* ($7), but restaurants always hike the price to about £4.50 ($9).

Mmmm, haven't paid $4.50 for a beer since I was a student...

* Well, £3.54 as of last Sunday.

Hopefully there was a decent sized group of people at the restaurant. Six tall beers (just shy of a 12 pack) is quite a bit for mom and pop while the kids only got chocolate milk.

Spaghetti with mandarin oranges sounds gross. Oh they were probably on the side.

Licensing per number of processors makes sense for a server, I guess, since it's a way of gauging how many people can use it at a given time, although at that point you might as well license based on number of gigs of ram.

But for CAD? Sorry, your machine is too fast! You need better license! A single-user program that has a different license based on HOW POWERFUL THE MACHINE IS is just sparta.

It depends what you're drinking and what size. The beers in question are "tall" beers (between 22-24 ounces) rather than a pint (20 ounces which is more common). Also, Miller Lite is inexpensive. You would expect to pay about $4-$5 for a Miller Lite, but $5-7 for a Guiness, Newcastle, etc.

The "warning, don't cook" is likely a marker that this is being added to their restaurant bill from the bar - it goes on the bill, but they arne't given it, because the bar already gave it to them.

This happens a fair bit at chain restaurants - you arrive, you've got a wait before a table is free, you go to the bar and get drinks, then your table is ready and you move over. Rather than make you pay up at the time, they just start your "restaurant" table bill with a bunch of items already on it, and a note to not actually provide you with those.

The same thing would happen if they'd gotten an appetizer with their drinks at the bar.

(But, yeah, customer shouldn't see it)

I don't think that the app should not run. SQL server is licensed the same way.

I'd like to know what is the logic behind regulating that, though... Do they have stuff in there that will dynamically allocate threads and only as many threads as processors you have ? What if I only want to buy one license and let it use one processor on a quad processor machine. Especially in this day and age when multi-core computers are now common. Why should we pay more to run the same software on a dual core machine ?

I went to a nice restaurant a couple of weeks ago. They'd just brought in a new vegan menu - I was quite impressed. So, my wife and I ordered from the vegan menu, and our waiter diligiently went to the till and input the new codes for the vegan versions of our dishes. The food arrived covered in cheese and crab. The poor lad was so embarrased - in the end it turned out that although he was putting in the vegan versions on his till, the one up in the kitchen wasn't set up to print out the vegan menu so it was telling the chefs to cook the normal version.

Compared to that, the comments on the customer's receipt here are as nothing. Also, there was a news story over here a few weeks ago (can't find an online link atm) about a restuarant where the waiters had put some very abusive remarks on a customers bill and they were printed out on the receipt. The restaurant got sued, IIRC...

AFAIK most applications that use per-processor licensing have the entry level at up to 2 processors. So you wouldn't have to pay more to use dual core.

Quad core, on the other hand...

Then whoever wrote the software should change what it says to something like *already served* instead of *don't cook*.

Oh well.

From what I understand, the consensus is that the owners of multiprocessor machines (up until dual/quad core became average consumer affordable) are businesses/institutes who are using it for-profit. The more procs, the beefier the machine, the (usually) more profit. Per-processor licenses are therefore used when the software company wants people who make a profit off their stuff to pay more. Because they can.

Don't cook on an order indicates that the food or drink was already made before it got entered in the system, so that another extra one does not get made. Sure, the wording is kitchen-specific, but that doesn't really warrant a WTF.
