Obviously, if the nurse didn't have time to push a button, she didn't have time to be acknowledged, talked to, chatted with, cajoled, or anything else. Why she doesn't even have time to worry about professionalism.

For the third story, that was kind of a rotten thing to do. But then again, if a person is unwilling to pay for work performed, you must return the computer to them in the state they brought it to you.

In most cases, you'd be right that it was rotten, but sometimes you have to be really assertive when pointing out how big an dumbass/asshole someone is.

For that third story, the store can actually refuse to hand his computer back until he pays for the services rendered. I'm afraid I'd have been even pettier, though. I wouldn't have let him watch, and I'd have made him wait a week for me to fix it.

As for the first one, I'd have had stern words with anyone who reprimanded me in that situation. She was clearly out of line and preferred waiting 30 minutes for a fix than doing a simple check. There's no way I would have taken that. And if they still thought that she shouldn't be required to push a button rather than waste 2 people's time, then I'd have gone somewhere else that didn't have so many HR problems.

Or just hold on to it until he pays. I think that's pretty much the standard anywhere (ie mechanic).

... Flabbergasted, I stood there for a minute letting the rage settle in. After punching my mattress a few times, I got dressed and drove across town to the hospital. I walked in, took the elevator to her floor, and went straight towards the nurse’s desk.

Not even acknowledging her, I walked straight up to the Zebra printer, pushed the online button, and saw it immediately start printing. I turned around, walked to the elevator, and went home without saying a word.

I'm hoping Eric had a decent manager who would stand up for him. Such a manager would go to the department in question and explain how this simple little fix now cost two hours of overtime pay plus call-in pay for having the analyst come in just to press a button.

Sadly, we're now salaried, so if I go in to fix something, I don't get paid nothin' more.

The fact that he got written up tells me he doesn't have such a manager, which is the real WTF. My manager is the kind who would stand up like, and has stood up like that, in times of ridiculousness like this. My manager (managers, actually . . . I have two . . .) is great like this.

Maybe the printing could wait 30 minutes, but the nurse had other things she needed to do that couldn't wait for the time it would take for support to walk her through printer diagnostics. Nurses are busy people.

Oh great, now we have ourselves a real-life BOFH...

Then the nurse will suddenly have a work place "accident" by being locked in the elevator for 9 hours and once she finally gets out, she "slips" down the stairs. Really? "If the light on front is off, press the button" is too much time?

What if it happens again in five minutes? She's going to have to call him again, and she's clearly too busy to be taught how to do it herself.

I understand where you're coming from, but seriously, as far as I know they don't. I'm not happy with how much I'm getting paid, but, truly, they are a big part of the reason I stay. I work for a large hospital with multiple outreach sites. We get to play with pretty up-to-date technology. (I wouldn't say it's all cutting edge, but there are many places that are well behind us -- in particular, our local ISPs are using equipment we've long since pitched.) We all have the same view as a team -- let's fix the problem and figure out how to prevent it in the future, but don't focus blame. It makes for a really easy work environment.

Then you assign someone less busy to deal with the tech, like a CNA. Truth be told, RNs tend to push their weight around when it's absolutely unnecessary. Most (not all, but most) patients are not that critical that trying to help the tech for a few minutes will kill anyone. And if it's really that busy, the RN should be talking to the on-duty administrator to get more help in the unit.

Wow, Eric. If you had any balls you might get ahead in life. Fucking computer people like him are the reason why the rest of us get treated like shit. You should have never got out of bed and should have sent a letter to her manager for calling you about something so trivial and her refusal to power cycle the printer as you told her to do.

I bill by the hour and don't even work in the same organization as my clients and I get treated with more respect. Then again, I also have the balls to tell someone to go get fucked. They always have it coming and it's heresy when they make the accusation, anyway. But since they have it coming, they won't usually report it.

I also double my rates for any work outside of 8am and 5pm. You'd be amazed how many people will accept 15 minutes of downtime during lunch instead of demanding the work be done after hours.

Grow some balls so our industry can get some respect. K, thanks.

That's impossible, if u know anything about hospital codes, in the event of color code event, you are require to drop everything and answer that call, you are only excused from that if you are busy saving someone. Any clinical staff that says, "no, i could of saved the patient, but IT told me i had to troubleshoot the printer" would lose their license.

That nurse had time to write him up. She was on a graveyard shift with a god complex.

Funny story: when I was a wee lad playing with a Win95 box once, I realized that you can change the extension of a file from .jpg to .gif to .bmp and PaintShopPro will still open it. This might start to give the impression that changing the file extension actually does something.
