They ask for as much detail as possible and then only give you 255 characters to do it.

I like how the Late Penalty Tax Return Notice says "I did not receive your tax report by the due date" and not "You did not file your tax return" as we'd get in America. It makes it more personal and makes it sound like it isn't accusing him of being negligent (it still is, but we all know it's not what you say but how you say it).

Within the minimal space of 255 characters afforded me by the arbitrary restriction on the size of input in this field, the most detail that I could possibly provide regarding my request or question would be that this box is not long enough to contain it!

It was a clue. Scott should have used XML compression on the text field.

As we all know, in the best cases, representing data in XML format can compress it to as little as twenty or thirty times its original size.

I certainly hope that you sent them a check for ZERO, along with a copy of the invoice.

Of course any publicly accessible URL would do if you cannot fit your text in 255 characters

And the disk cleanup screen, I recognize that error from a program I wrote in the past that I was not thinking of negative numbers, and then it displayed negative numbers like that, but I thought non-embedded devices would have libraries for dealing with it properly already, and if it is in fact an error with negative numbers, I'm not sure why it would have negative numbers anyways (too small number size maybe?)

And the one that you can select only Yes and not the other answer, what I would do first is check the value for each option that is returned to the server and see if changing that value fixes anything

I'm not sure the tax penalty would still be a WTF if the rest of the page was shown. The penalty is normally £100, but it cannot exceed the amount of tax owed, so if you filed late saying you were due a tax refund, the penalty would be zero. The rest of the page might detail this.

Re: Tax Broke

2009-03-24 11:16 • by pscs
The Disk Cleanup one is just plain bizarre.

The nonsense text in the 'Temporary Internet Files' is a bug, OK. They can happen (I'm not sure how, but anyway).

What gets me is how it does arithmetic on that nonsense to produce 2 more nonsense strings as well.

The only thing I can think is that instead of using 64 bit integer arithmetic, they have a strange long number implementation using character strings which is just weird.

If they were doing plain integer arithmetic with the nonsense text I could see it displaying incorrect numerical answers as the totals, but not more nonsense text.
