Here's today's textless. As for 1.23, bstorer (with #186547) definitely set us up for AbbydonKrafts' artsy-yet-creepy Dreams of Erica, which then led to The Real WTF's #186571 and Whoey's #186737.

<quote>I should also note that this is a trial run of MFD; so far, only twenty-five episodes are planned, and they will run M-W-F. If you come to like the comic after a couple weeks, then please let me know.</quote>

Dear Alex, i'm letting you know that I'm not letting you know.

    Hahaha!

I thought MFD was just an excuse to get everyone else to do their own comic.

Maybe instead of the original MFD's there should just be themes: "Today the theme is having lunch with a hippy/opensource/MUD guy. Everyone do that or anything else as desired. Bonus points for hot t-shirt girl."

I disagree somewhat with the variable weight of the lines - the dirty secret of many cartoon artists is to draw big and reduce - variable lines don't reduce that well because you lose a lot of detail. With that said, I prefer my Sakura Pigma Brush Pen for a lot of my work (read:I like variable lines)

Knowing George McD. only by his description you click on the posting, I think the writing suffers from his lack of corporate IT experience.
  • DoctorFriday 2008-03-31 13:36
    (rats, comment got cut off)

Really what could help the writing is if George had been that IT guy fresh from college who was the code-monkey contractor. Or better yet, got thrown into some maniacal, home grown / 3rd party fusion app that is critical to the bottom line of "insert mega corp here"

  • Kozz 2008-03-31 14:44
Absolutely brilliant, well done. I second the request that MFD would be better (*cough*) if only done once per week, or even once every two weeks. Spend just a little bit of time on writing (even if the drawing continues to be substandard) and it would be appreciated.

Nearly all of the "response comics" are at least somewhat funny when compared to the original, and frequently MORE funny. MFD has usually been worse than adding together the worst elements from Family Circus, Garfield, User Friendly. At least each of those have SOME single redeeming quality, whether it be artwork or character development. Oi.
  • a Brazilian 2008-03-31 14:53

Too bad I'm hosting with shitty Geocities (I already had a site from way back when, what can I say??) and the bandwidth runs out ridiculously fast :(
  • DeLos 2008-03-31 15:04
I appreciate the fact that someone took the time to fully explain the different problems they have with the comic and makes full arguments to show their reasoning.

Much better than just saying "this sucks, i will never read WTF again!!@!!"

I also appreciate that unique content is tough to do and I am quite curious to see what MFD evolves into.
  • AbbydonKrafts 2008-03-31 15:12

  • George E. Mcdougall 2008-03-31 15:23
This is really a good comment. I agree with a lot.
If MFD is continued, which might not happen. I guarantee the outside line thickness will increase. I've been looking at a lot of other comics and am realizing my mistakes. We're working on the humor as well- especially what works and what works over time. In the future hopefully each comic will individually be funny, and will not be just a bland bridge to get to the next comic. I really enjoyed this comment it took a lot of thought and creativity.
  • Anon 2008-03-31 15:52
Well, if you're going to improve it, I say keep going on this thing. Especially if the style gets consistent day to day.
Was this whole story arc just to get him to Google or something?

  • rox_midge 2008-03-31 17:34
The point was not that I hate the comic and I'm leaving and I'm never coming back. The point was that I like the idea and I'm glad that George is trying it, but there's a few things about it that should be improved in order to make it interesting. The point was to provide constructive, honest criticism.

I guess what everyone is saying is that, in order to enhance the characters and the plotlines, you have to take up a code monkey job in a big company. And suffer, god damn it!
    :)

Now seriously, if you want to better your art I'd recommend this book: Fun With Pencil by Andrew Loomis. It is from the 50s but it's pure gold.

Whoever designed this clearly has some experience in the corporate world. Yes, every company has some system that was written decades ago in a language nobody uses anymore. And yes, if you have even seen the system and give some indication that you know what it's written in, you'll be the expert of it in no time.
  • RayS 2008-04-01 08:36
Hahaha. Only one today to get a laugh out of me.
  • nat42 2008-04-01 09:06
    rox_midge for president!

TIP: When colouring your line art - set the line art as the top layer (you'll need to change the blending mode) and colour a blank layer beneath it. While you won't be able to floodfill, you'll find areas cover fairly quickly with a mouse and a large-ish brush with much better accuracy and your lines will stay pristine.
  • NaN 2008-04-01 09:24
    Keep MFD!
    Keep MFD!

Seriously, I feel dirty replying with text here. The poster may have had "Points", but mainly it was that they had too much time on their hands. When I didn't laugh at MFD, I laughed at the comments.

I come for laughs and cringes, not art 101.

This post neither makes me laugh or cringe.
  • T $ 2008-04-01 09:31
Programmer Analyst II!!! Why, that's better than Programmer Analyst I! It's always a treat to look around and find all the things that change between the original version and your version.
  • grampf 2008-04-01 09:56
George, seriously...At this point, are you even trying? It's not like you're on a schedule, so IF you want to continue, then PLEASE (!)
    * don't do copy and paste. anywhere. it not only sucks, it mocks OUR efforts to create something unique out of it in the comments
    * bad artwork isn't that important - look at the old penny arcades, or at xkcd, or even at the old pvp. BUT work on it! at least TRY to improve. don't only draw for the comic, draw A LOT. don't stay on this shitty level or you might become the new (but less successful) userfriendly.
*in fact, MFD feels exactly like userfriendly: shitty, stereotypical characters in an IT-setting; bad (if any) jokes; etc. pp. But at least that uf-guy is cranking out one comic each day (but it's still crap).

MFD HAS POTENTIAL, but only if you take the time to make it better. it doesn't have to be great, just make it ok - we'll do the rest. but with a strip like 1.24, really: we can't. it's im-fucking-possible. at the other stripes, at least some of the user-generated content was REAAAAALY funny. Not so at this strip. they aaaall suck, like, HARD.

    Best. Comment. Ever.

This strip is just atrocious. I don't even care about the art. It's just *NOT FUNNY*; it uses way, way overused cliche's that might have been amusing 8 years ago with Dilbert. Maybe.
  • Cornflakes 2008-04-03 10:49

Cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes, cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes. Cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes.

Looks like somebody has been half studying ancient Egyptian Art when it comes to the hands and fingers being the same on the left and right side. All we need now is the goofy profile of the head with the shoulders and chest facing forward. Then at least the strip would have a style instead of copy/paste.
