    WTF!

Can I be first to say "April Fool"?
  • Dave 2008-04-01 08:02
Is this new site going to have unfunny, badly drawn cartoons, or just amusing piss-takes on poor development practices?
  • WTF 2008-04-01 08:03
    WTF!!!
  • Kenny 2008-04-01 08:03
The new direction for the site is what will make me stop coming here. You've changted the name for the site like 3 times in the last month. There is already a website dedicated to those stupid cats. We don't need them here. Comics, fine, but no cats please.
  • Kenny 2008-04-01 08:04
    Aprils fools.

Captcha: "acsi"?!? Shouldn't that be "ascii"? Oh no, hang on, actually it should read "unicode". ;-)

I for one am very glad to see that you have finally mended your heathen ways.

    Think of the children
  • Man 987876980 2008-04-01 08:13
I actually read nearly all the way through before I understood! Considering the many recent changes it didn't seem implausible until the kitten showed up!

Would have been more convincing if you'd replaced WTF in more than two places ;) Out of interest, doesn't whatever framework the site is using have filters? Or middleware to do transformations on the view?

Am I the only one who is sick of fake news / fake posts as April Fools jokes? Personal jokes, practical jokes, they're all fine. But when I come here and visit other sites, I don't want to have to scrutinize every goddamn post on the 1st of April to figure out if its fake. Same goes for news sites too. I expect the place to at least try to have some honest and integrity. When I see fake crap they put up, it makes me question every damn thing I read there.

I'm only ranting about this because I hated the first name change this site went through, and am a die-hard fan of the WTF staying in the name.
  • Anonymous Fat Git 2008-04-01 08:28
Heck is a cus word in my house... please consider changing it to "What The Hey?"
  • Alan 2008-04-01 08:30
For fucks sake, I am sick of all these constant changes of the name. this isnt a childrens web-site, we are all adults here who can handle a bit of swearing- come on. Its just another inication of the terrible slide in quality this site has taken.

And LOLCATS!!! Is everything now so okeydokey in IT there is nothing funny left??? I will not be updating my bookmark - I will be deleting it
  • snoofle 2008-04-01 08:30
Today is April 1? Foo. Feh. Fiddle Faddle!

...nope; it just doesn't have quite the same satisfaction as a good old fashioned "WTF!"
  • moltonel 2008-04-01 08:32
Hum.... calling somebody with "hey" isn't really friendly either. What about "Well Then, Honey" ? :)

Gee. Leave your sense of humor wherever it was you left your brain?

I knew in about a millisecond that it was an April Fool's gag. If you couldn't figure that out, perhaps this site is a little too complex for you.

sigh ... maybe I'm getting old ... but I'm declaring April 1st to be 'Internet Free' day since the jokes are getting stale (although WTH would have been funny if you hadn't actually *really* changed the sitename last year). All in all, this is much better than Wikipedia's IMA Hogg.

    That... that is just failure.

    (It may even be worse).
  • Anon 2008-04-01 08:43
I was going to complain that this was a too obvious for an April's fools joke, but reading some of the comments, I clearly overestimated the intelligence of some of the posters.
  • MWB 2008-04-01 08:43
"What the hey" is also a shortening of "What the hell".

Personally, I think the site should become "Gee Willikers, Wally"

Perhaps the jokes are getting stale, but it's apparent from this thread that quite a few people still fall for them. And their comments are the most entertaining.

    Hear hear!

I understand that the admins don't like to have to explain to their Grandmothers (and other relatives) what "wtf" means -- but instead of changing their domain name *yet again*, why not just tell people it means "What the Fudge?" or "Woodtree Frogs" or "Win the Farm"

Trying to please a small demographic of people by inconveniencing a larger demographic (the TARGET demographic, even) is stupid. Even if kids WERE reading this site, the language on here is strictly cleaner (comments notwithstanding) than anything on basic cable; And I'm sure any kid able to use the Internet already knows what WTF means.

Quit pandering to the grandmothers! They just use their high-speed internet to dry their clothes anyways!

At least, with the current name, I could say "the daily what-the-heck" out loud. As it is, I have to say, "Hey George, have you seen today's daily dubya tee eff?" It doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as the words, but in this conservative environment they're NSFW when spoken aloud.

My wife had just called to tell me there was a goat in our backyard. Seriously? I love goats but we live in the city/suburbs so I found it strange. Then she yelled that a dinosaur was eating it. We just watched Jurassic Park on Sunday.

My point being that I was in a skeptical mood when I read this article. I had to see if Alex actually went the extra mile and purchased thedailywth.com.
  • 18Rabbit 2008-04-01 09:34

    Ha Ha. April Fools perhaps.
  • BlueKnot 2008-04-01 09:45
I just can't believe he went so far as to actually register thedailywth.com ... too funny; perfect gag for this site after all the hoopla over the name in the last year.
  • cthulhu 2008-04-01 09:48
pfff you could have let it run a bit to see if anyone was taken in. There is no award for being the first one to expose it.
  • Anonymoose 2008-04-01 09:48
I, for one, would like to chime in on the name-changing-hate band wagon. It's not profane now, I hope you're happy and will quick changing the god damn name. No one cares but you, so knock it the fuck off.

Also, the comics are really bad. To the point where I don't even look at those articles. If there's no punch line, it's not a comic.. so why would I read it? If you need an artistic outlet, that's fine, but keep up with the real articles.

Remember your customer base here. We're tech nerds who are looking for our daily dose of computer trickery. If you stray too far from that, you'd better attract a new audience or maybe your current audence's employer's time won't be worth it anymore.

    For fuck's sake.
  • Tim B 2008-04-01 09:49
Can somebody censor this post please? I was teaching my cat how to read and now I can tell it really wants to drop an F bomb. Cats are hard enough to control as it is and if I had wanted to follow my pet around all day making sure it doesn't cuss I would have gotten a dog. Thanks for creating one heck of an entertaining site.
  • Jens 2008-04-01 09:49
Finally, Good clean family entertainment you can trust!
But what about calling it what the fudge? or perhaps the
daily gosh darn it! Or any exclamation used by Professor Frink from the Simpsons.
  • sunbath 2008-04-01 09:50
    It's the yearly WTF!
  • Disgruntled Long Time Reader 2008-04-01 09:53

  • Skaven 2008-04-01 09:55
I LOVE the new changes, but can we add a clbuttic filter to these comments? Its extremely offensive that these people get to express their every thought!
  • sceptic 2008-04-01 09:56
I call April Fools on this one.

    Shenanigans!
  • ElDoro 2008-04-01 09:58

"the daily wtf" is simply the best.
    thanks
  • Aprile Fool's Day? 2008-04-01 10:02
Through out each of our career, there were always the moment that WTH just didn't cut it because what you saw right there just didn't deserve any politeness (including the person who did it).

I am sorry but this rename sounds more like an April Fool's joke to me, because I was saying to myself "WTH" (not WTF, mind you, as there IS a difference).

Ok, I'll stick with this theory to help me sleep through tonight.
  • ElDoro 2008-04-01 10:02
    ahh .. damn ... 1. april.
    i'm a fool :-)

I feel sorry for Alan; there he was, getting in the spirit, and everyone missed the point. I think it was his description of everything in the IT world being "okiedokey" that persuaded me he was playing along...

nah - it's funny watching people get worked up, consider it a meta-April Fools
  • KillerConsultant.com 2008-04-01 10:10
    It was about time!
I cannot count the occasions in which I thought "enough with the elaborate information on programming mishaps and project disasters! ME NEEDZ MO KITTENZ!"
... and then I was utterly sad to find the only emotion-bearing thing be the smiley in the logo, while my brain already started tickling in a bad way because it received unusual amounts of that so-called "intelligent humor" (which sounds nonsensical to me) on this site.

Nevermore! This really is a noble move. You should all be proud of yourselves and celebrate by purring like a cat. In public.
  • Brian 2008-04-01 10:10
We'll have to mark this date in history...
  • Guy 2008-04-01 10:10
    Ummm... April 1.
  • johny 2008-04-01 10:13

  • PETA 2008-04-01 10:41
I'm sorry, but I must protest your horrific plans to take advantage of cats. People need to understand that the senseless exploitation of animals must cease. While one would have hoped that with all your apparent "knowledge" you would have known better, but alas that does not seem to be the case. We can only hope you choose to reverse your decision within 24 hours or suffer what will surely be an onslaught of protest from those who believe that cute little pussies should not be exploited and abused for your pleasure.

Point taken. I am just tired of having to take everything, and I mean EVERYTHING with a grain of salt on April Fools Day because some people think its funny to post fake news articles, or do stuff like this.

Is it because I am a humourless individual? I hope not. Is it because I've already been duped by a couple fake things today which either got me excited or riled up, only to find out it was a stupid joke? Most likely.

AWESOME! Kitty cats! Just imagine all of the great new directions 'Mandatory Fun Day' could have with kitties!

There could be a Godfather-like scene with Gilroy petting a cat while listening to a baker tell him of how his website was mercilessly DOS attacked by two young men who "walked free that very day!"

Or Gilroy is in a storage room doing some girl on an old copy machine when a kitty cat suddenly comes up from behind and mistakes Gilroy's family jewels for a fun play-toy.
  • real_aardvark 2008-04-01 13:38
    Kenny:
The new direction for the site is what will make me stop coming here. You've changted the name for the site like 3 times in the last month. There is already a website dedicated to those stupid cats. We don't need them here. Comics, fine, but no cats please.
Stupendous! A man who can't type and has huge fat fingers (changted) and still prefers comics to cats. (He also can't count, or at least works with non-terrestrial months.)

Not to disparage the comic thing, but that's a cute cat. Any chance you'll lose that worthless sticker rubbish and send us kittens instead?

I'm sorry, but I must agree here! I think exploring more content is a COOL THING, but why the FUCK not do it with ANOTHER SITE?

A friend of mine turned me on to this site roughly a year ago, and frankly I've watched it turn from a truly "currious perversions from IT" into a damn personal "blog" for the creator(s) that seem to contain just anything they find mildly humerous.

What happened to the REAL funny content? Is there simply not enough of it to post a TRUE, FUNNY story from IT daily? (Or even every other day!?!)

In closing, I too won't bother to update my bookmark. As sad as I am to press it, the DEL key it is!

    KillerConsultant.com:
    It was about time!
I cannot count the occasions in which I thought "enough with the elaborate information on programming mishaps and project disasters! ME NEEDZ MO KITTENZ!"
... and then I was utterly sad to find the only emotion-bearing thing be the smiley in the logo, while my brain already started tickling in a bad way because it received unusual amounts of that so-called "intelligent humor" (which sounds nonsensical to me) on this site.

Nevermore! This really is a noble move. You should all be proud of yourselves and celebrate by purring like a cat. In public.

    And once again in context!

Um - I already do this, especially to my wife . . .

I can understand why some people didn't make the connection to April fools...

I came in this morning to read this post and thought WTF! myself...

    It's April 2nd 14:14 where I am... Timezones can be a bitch.
  • Lezzoh 2008-04-02 00:20

I don't want to have to scrutinize every goddamn post on the 1st of April to figure out if its fake.

Really, you should be doing that every day, not just April 1st.

    John:
Same goes for news sites too. I expect the place to at least try to have some honest and integrity.

The mainstream print media mostly just prints the press releases they're fed these days, with a bit of sub-editing. Honesty and integrity went the way of the Dodo in favour of increased workforce productivity.

    John:
When I see fake crap they put up, it makes me question every damn thing I read there.

How is that a bad thing?

Analysis of these 247 comments confirms my theory that computer nerds love nothing better than pointing out flaws in other people's reasoning:

12 people posted variations of "Worst. Change. Ever."

104 people responded with variations of "Hey dumbbutt, it's April 1"

5 people pointed out that there sure are a lot of people explaining the obvious.

1 person explains it all. I win.

TRWTF is that the first of April ended over 15 hours ago for me and there's still discussion. And if you (attempt to) fool someone after midday doesn't that make you the fool? So you are all fools as of 27 hours ago.

What DO you say when you find yourself in WTF kind of situation ?

    1. "What the heck ?"

    I don't think so.

    2. "What the hell ?"

    Maybe ...

    3. "What the fuuuck !?!"

I'm sure most of us would say exactly that. Even we to whom English is not a mother tongue.

"What the hey" is also a shortening of "What the hell".

Personally, I think the site should become "Gee Willikers, Wally"

    ^ this made me laugh...
    A Nonny Mouse (Ms):
I am so delighted to see our beloved website heading in the direction of greater gentility. Might I suggest a further rename to "Oh My Giddy Aunt!"?

    ^ this even more !

From now on I will using these in comments when I find shockingly bad code, thank you :-) (although I think I'll just go for "Gee Willikers!", I think the "Wally" is extraneous to the conveyance of the sentiment)

I hope that future programmers stumbling across the comments will read them using the same voices that I have in my head....that sounds a bit unstable, ah....

One way or the other, it is such a time saver that Alex does not have to do all of his frequent name changes to the Worse Than Hailure site manually and has software methods to do it for him instead.

Whether or not they are static or suitably "enterprisey" should be secondary considerations, right? After all... Just do What It Takes, and no more. ;-)
  • an 2008-04-02 06:18
Honestly, thedailywth.com should have just been implemented to act as an alternate hostname for this server. Then there should have been a redirect so that thedailywtf.com visitors wound up on the thedailywth.com version, reinforcing the joke.

Hear, hear! Quit pandering to the small percentage of the demographic that understands an April Fools joke.

That was FUN. Our class brought a UNIX server to its knees begging for a restart with unintentional forkbombs. I was home on an emulated VT100 dialup waiting upwards of a minute for each character to echo back from the server.

We killed spot! *snif* (spot was its name; cerberus was a perfect name for a 64CPU box.)
