So... the Galaxy Note is a great and extremly useful device for me. There is only one device in my computing history that could beat it in usefulness, the Psion 5mx, back then. Well... a ~5" device with a slide out keyboard would be an instant buy for me.

  • (cs)

Can't upgrade from the earlier Windows 8 beta to the Release Preview, hence why you can't keep anything.

I tried that tool but it complained that I was booted off of a VHD so it couldn't upgrade. But I didn't want to upgrade, I planned to do a fresh install but I needed it to download the ISO first which it wouldn't do. I had to download it manually via the alternate download link on the Windows 8 site.

If this was a final release, I would agree with you. But in the final release, you'll be able to transfer some things from Windows 7, so the transfer screen was created. It's blank because the functionality hasn't been enabled yet. You can't really complain that a Preview Release is missing some functionality.

Also, to everyone saying they love their note, I hate you and everything about you.

It's a WTF because it's giving you an option with a radio button when really it should be a warning saying "all yo' shit is about to be deleted" with a tickbox saying "awww ok then".

What does the in-flight nav screen error say? It's too teeny.

  • Ralph (unregistered)

    Wait a second.

Someone thought it would be a good idea to run Windows on an airplane???!!!! And you said "yeah, sure"?

Did you not read the fine print? Did you skip over the part where they disclaimed all liability for "unexpected errors" (because when you sell crapware, many errors are expected)?? Did your eyes glaze over when they talked about the possibility of system crashes, and you didn't get that the "system" is your deathtrap plane???

What about the paragraph where it said you can't sue them for faults no matter how negligent they were? Didn't it worry you when you had to initial the sentence saying this contract is binding on your heirs??

Windows on an airplane. Humppphhh! More dangerous than a terrorist.

    Nice Troll...

On a more serious note, it's the public display system, not the navigation/control system, and no, they generally do NOT run windos to the best of my knowledge (that WOULD be huge WTF though).

As some who programs the GPS part of flight control systems, I can assure you that no, we don't use Windows. It is a propriety RTOS that tests the functionality of EVERY line of code and EVERY true/false conditional statement.

You realize Windows is only controlling the entertainment system, right?

I didn't see anything in the original post about an "entertainment system". I saw "private plane" and "in-flight navigation".

For those not familiar with the highly technical terms, "navigation" is how you know where you are and how to get where you are going. It's not "entertainment".

Windows is the de-facto standard for navigation software for small boats, so I would not be surprised to find it in small planes.

I'm sure the flight systems use an RTOS, and probably a proprietary one.

Maybe aircraft flight systems are exclusively some RTOS, but there are Windows-based ECDIS systems for use in commercial shipping. So, next time you see a container ship, wonder if it is using Windows to navigate.

(I'd say "next time you see a supertanker, but most of you aren't likely to be anywhere that a supertanker can go...)

Yes, the article called it "in-flight navigation." But it looks to me like one of those "Where Are You Now?" screens you see on large commercial airliners as well, so you can nudge your husband and say "Look honey, we're passing over Penns Neck!"

Why would the passengers be shown output from a critical system? (It's sort of a stretch to think that a map like that could be "critical" in the first place...)
