    First, belive it or not.

    Beside the article, I think TDWTF's editor should include the link to the original. Actually that should be their frist sentence in the article. (Yes it is a mere google search away, but that's not the point.)

    In the article that ran three days ago there was a linked mention to the original, and we still got a clueless guy accusing them of a copy-pasta job, "Best of 2016" title be damned. Imagine now that there's no such link to the original.

    The sheer number of applications, services, drivers, and OS processes that forget to clean up after themselves -- or even bother to do occasional sanity checking -- is exactly what gave birth to CCleaner. And CCleaner doesn't come anywhere close to finding all the nooks and crannies of insane waste of space, you sometimes need to hunt around with Ridnacs before you can clear up enough to download this month's critical update on your SSD.

    The same is true of Unix/Linux, but at least the default assumption there is that logs older than X days should just be trashed because ain't nobody got time for that. If you need more you can archive them yourself. On Windows, only the OS itself and Linux-ported services do autorotation, the rest just keep using more space until you clear everything.

    So wouldn't a reboot fix it?

    @foxshadis

    Also: Temporary files that aren't and temporary folders that aren't cleaned at each reboot. Video Editors that drop little "scene finder" files in your Video folder. And logs. Oh, I could go on and on about logs that never get cleaned because the log file is just a massive file that gets appended instead of seperating them by day/hour and cleaning the old stuff.

    I guess there is a reason most programmer offices are a giant mess.

    This is very impossible to make believe in.

    So the real WTF is the database, not the software abusing it? Ridiculous. A very limp editorial indeed...

    Back in DOS days my standard AUTOEXEC.BAT file included a tree wipe of the temp directory. Until one installation with TEMP=C:\DOS

    It should, but the problem will come back in a few days if you don't remove those bloatwares first.

    Many years ago i had this same problem, on a production server and it wasn't log or temporary files, someone had hacked the machine and was running their own ftp server full of pirated movies. If only they hadn't totally filled up the drive i don't think anyone would have noticed.

    TEMP=C:\DOS is a hangworthy felony.
