    Blank page indeed.

Would have been a better picture of a "carte blanche" if it was on a wooden table.

If a coworker tells you that some code will destroy your sanity, they're probably right.

  • (disco) in reply to HardwareGeek

    I know!

Don't you dare throw away your sanity on this project, you hear me?

TIL you can throw sanity places. I'd like a double-portion of Sanity, STAT!

  • (disco)

I hear they used to work at Google!

Ummm... why don't they anymore? I think there may be a reason...

  • (disco) in reply to Tsaukpaetra

You must've missed the part where you threw the vast majority of your sanity into a garbage disposal as a required step of registering for this forum. It doesn't take very long, so you can be forgiven for not being consciously aware of what you were doing. It's kind of like clicking the Agree to ToS button/checkbox/radio button.

Now that you speak of it, I do seem to have vague impressions of high-pitched screeching as a supple hand guided my own to click the button....

Oh that's just the inmates. Take no notice of them.

So Erika joined the developer team just to do all the work alone? With some idiots still generating useless code?

    Why?

Wouldn't it be better to quietly do her testing and wait for the disaster, she couldn't be blamed for?

  • (disco) in reply to martin

    she couldn't be blamed for?

Well whose fault would it be? The darlings of management, the ex-google employees? You think it'll come down on their heads? :)

  • (disco)

"When all you have is a regex hammer ..." mused Erika, pouring herself another whiskey sour.

TRWTF right here - diluting perfectly good whiskey with impurities... unless it's not perfectly good whiskey in which case that's TRWTF.

My tired brain read the title as The Cate Blanchett Pattern twice before getting with the program :frowning:

  • (disco)

Ho hum ... cow-orker who's a bit of a drama queen ... two guys from the other office who aren't as good as they think they are ... developer who's competent at debugging and making good ... and a management structure which recognises the architects of disaster and promptly dismisses them ... where's the WTF??

  • (disco)

    they constructed a regex pattern

using (of course) a regex to do the escape

"When all you have is a regex hammer ..."

Is "carte blanche" also a reference to WSoDs? Come on Yami, admit it, the original code was in RoR, and this is a story about a Discourse prototype.

You clearly don't have enough hammers

The first rule of regex is don't use regex, and hit anybody that does with a hammer.

You won't have to worry about ...

All IT veterans know this is a red flag: Whenever an outside organization tells you what you don't need to worry about, that's exactly what you need to worry about. Because the reason they're telling you not to worry about it is because they don't want you thinking about it, which means there's almost definitely something wrong with it.

    Fuck you give me sanity.

How many years have you been doing PHP? I think it's way too late for that.

  • (disco) in reply to HardwareGeek

I was going to make some kind of comment that sanity stopped occurring around here when a certain person joined but that seemed too harsh.

As for PHP... 13 years in March.

Whoa, I need to write a novel about a future where the only currency is sanity. Oh god...that would make rich people SANE!

News at eleven. Politicians have been around a bit longer than computers.

No, no, no. It would make sane people rich :-)

But only until poor people force them to develop WordPress plugins.

I find this story hard to believe …

Sensing her frustration, Ricardo beamed at her.
You’re not telling me there’s a man alive who’s able to do that.

now there, no need to start introducing weapons of mass destruction as well as torture in to our brand new nirvana right?

I'm not sure what's worse: that I knew exactly who your were talking about or that I think nothing is too harsh for said person.

Actually a few weeks before Christmas is just about right for O Come O Come Emmanuel, it is an Advent carol which is the church season before Christmas.
