Installation Error with JRE 1.4
Author: benway

I get the following message when trying to reinstall JRE 1.4. I also get this message while trying to uninstall the non-working version of the JRE

"An installation support file could not be installed. Catastrophic failure."

Any ideas?

try the following:
1)open regedit and delete the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft
if you have other java versions on your computer then just delete the keys associated with 1.4
2) find the JRE 1.4 clsid key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{jre clsid key} and then delete it
3) delete the following directory C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{clsid for jre 1.4}
