You know what?
I'll take these once a week if it means I don't have to deal with "This commic is brought to you by... You will be taken to MFD in 30...29..." |
TRWTF is that i still can't buy a biometric pup - which is the kind of ad i really do want to click on.
oh lawds, is dat sum sponsorships?

I'd take punch the monkey over MFD. |
*anything* has to better than the biometric dogs advert...
p.s. be honoured - Daily WTF is teh only site I have ads switched on for! |
the real WTF is the broken links,
railskit.com doesn't exist, maybe you meant railskits.com ? Way to thank the sponsors dude... |
Bummer, the RailsKits link is broken-- they deserve some of your hot linking dollars!
Note from Alex: Whoops! my bad, fixed! |
TRWTF is that the continuing sponsors are shown after the new guys - way to show the love to the people that have stuck by.
Is it just me, or is the RSS feed not updated any more? Last post I see is "Nepotism Trumps Interview".
Guys, the pups are not biometric - they don't read your fingerprint or anything. They're biomimetic, as in artificial structures that imitate biological life. A fingerprint reading dog, I mean, really....!
PS. I hate ads but at least they're relevant - better than the truth behind Scientology or Pokemon cursors... |

Not just you - I have exactly the same... |
Yeah, whoever heard of a dog that read fingerprints? They do DNA scans. |
If only there were some Pokemon cursors I'd be happy!!
I think it's only fair that we also use this thread to thank those who aren't sponsors. This is the age of equality, after all!
I personally would like to thank the good folks over at Discarded Online for their amazing free flash MMO that they're working on. They must have some grade-A geniuses working at that place, and I'll bet they are astonishingly handsome as well. |
Why don't more sites handle advertising like this?

I admit it. I adblock. Too many sites use ads that are too intrusive/disruptive for me not to.
But this, I don't mind - in fact, I would say this, I find useful. Not just a smattering of images, but also snippets of real information about the companies. The sole content in a dedicated article once a week -- and even though I hate ads, I'll actually read it because I may actually learn about a relevant and useful product. |
What?? No more pokemon cursors???//????/?slash?
Oh that's it, I'm outta here right now. I mean, I can cope with MFD and a few trolls here and there but this has gone way too far. This site is not what it used to be. |
The people who frequent the site have already been exposed to the continuing sponsors. Give the new guys a bit of the spotlight. |
Hey, my thanks to the sponsors. Thanks guys! Are companies guys or gals? Ships are gals, but companies?
Crap. How do a AdBlock that?
I found a Bug in your List of Sponsors:
BustedTees is missing from that list. Please fix! PS: RSS works fine for me. I use http://syndication.thedailywtf.com/TheDailyWtf |

Yeah, by sniffing your crotch. |
The most annoying ones of all time are the "You are visitor number 999999999999! (or now, some random number) THIS IS NOT A JOKE! YOU'RE A WINNER!", the "smileys with sound, d00d!" and the Scientology ones, though those last ones have more to do with the idea of promoting Scientologists. I once got one of those "contest" ones that had been very badly translated to Spanish. It said "Click on the hourglass before time starts working outwards!" WTF?!?! |
Same here. I even thought there was some issue with my RSS reader and was about to replace it |

What ads? |
Ah, that's what this site was missing, all the pingback/trackback spam!
Now it's like all the other blogs on the internet... |

Ugh. Missed my clarification...
Pingback/Trackback spam is twofold - first is a rickroll type thing where they redirect to some crap malware ridden site (the obvious one). The less obvious ones are "blogs" that are completely automated - they scrape other blog's content (probably using RSS), then post it it more or less identically as an article on their "blog". The sole purpose is to basically load up that site with tons of ads, and make the owner money that way, because the trackbacks/pingbacks can have an unfortunate side effect of defeating PageRank... More detail from Raymond Chen - http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2008/02/18/7761978.aspx |

The pictures of food gone bad are missing this time.
Poor effort! |

What we need it irish girl and bean bag girl in a two'sum ad! selling their pictures! Then this site would make some cache and be static proof with buffer funds. BRILLIANT!
I'm trying out Akismet for handling the pingback spam, and so far it's doing a good job; it's rejected like 50 so far. On top of that, I (or a moderator) will review new trackbacks and delete inappropriate ones. Hopefully, that'll do the trick. One thing I'm trying to figure out... why are several month/year old blog posts showing up in PingBack? A pingback for this old TDWTF article showed up from another blog's old article that was written May 11, 2007. Is there some giant pingback queue these sites are using, trying for years to do a pingback? Does it do a pingback whenever someone visits? I just don't get it... |
Redgate makes some pretty decent software - we've used their SQL Backup on some small business apps faor a client that were never getting backed up. Works pretty well, even with the SQL Server Express and MSDE...
Some non-WTF software, written for Windows. Now *that's* verging on a WTF right there... |
I'll take the job in Agios Athanasios, Cyprus. Maybe the Greek Cypriots will help met get rid of all this Turkish SPAM.

Actually, the British have cancer-sniffing dogs, and cancer means DNA mutations. |
The fact that this website is supported by ads is the true, epic WTF of this site. Only the most inept and helpless of the people i know still see ads. I sure as hell have never a programmer worth even the slightest bit suffer through ads.
Since this page has yet to go down, I can only imagine that the vast majority of this website is so utterly clueless that they can't even install an adblocker. Truly pathetic. |

Since I watched Eureka I checked out this "Made in Eureka" site...
Then I faced some real WTF: The whole page is in Flash and my Firefox RAM-usage jumped up to ~560 MB. When I closed the tab it had 50 MB RAM in use. Someone PLEASE give them Wilhelm's phone number! |
Wow, now the 80% of the front screen of this site is covered in ads. Whoever is running this site is a moron. No one minds some small google ads in a corner of the screen, and that also tend to give the most ad-revenue. More than that drives users away or makes them reach for their ad-blocker.
Even worse, when the ads is so blatandly pushed as in this site, users stop perceiving the site as community based. The manager has now made it clear for everyone, that this sites main purpose is to make him money. It is therefore time for us to stop generate his content for free. |
What, no witty asides? No references to wooden tables, Irish/Beanbag girls, File_not_found, one is not only the loneliest number but it ain't even a prime, step 2 being ???, Paula, Lyle, Initrode? "Now (not Now the) 80% of the front screen..." "Whoever is running this site..." might be a question best answered by paying attention. "When the ads are," not "when the ads is." (Unless you refer to you rown attention deficit syndrome, in which case you are correct and I apologise unreservedlu.) "Blatantly," not "blatandly." "Community based:" not been privy to the mission statement, guv. Plz send meh teh ligal-eaze. Nice Germanic comma to separate sub-clause from main clause, btw. Unfortunately it only works if you continue in Yoda-ese with "this site(')s main purpose to make him money is." It is indeed time for your version of "us" to stop, ahem, "generate" his content for free. Us that welcome open arms with would. Or, to paraphrase Oliver Cromwell in 1653 (a slimy little toad only marginally less objectionable than illiterate slash-dot habituees such as yourself), "You have posted too long for any good you have been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!" Note that I'm only saying this because I can beat KenW to it. I knew he had to be good for something. |

If you're looking for even more places to cram ads, I can think of one. There are plenty enough already, thanks.
Populus, fun game. |
Their motto seems to be any publicity is good publicity, and there's been somebody continuously spamming their product in free competition's newsgroups. |
Gee, real_aardvark! Thanks! I didn't know you cared. |
I was surprised to see ads for SlickEdit floating around the site. I work with their editor on a daily basis (as an OEM who customizes, repackages and reships their product under another name) and I have to say that it is a great piece of software. If you're not working in a Visual Studio environment, then you oughta be using SlickEdit.
