Well, there ya have it. Our first attempt ever at making a web comic. Make sure to follow COBOL Bill's advice and either contact me direct or fill out the reader survey. And don't forget: last chance (maybe) to make your own!

Honestly, it kind of failed to deliver on the comic side of stuff. Only the dices one was somewhat funny for me.

I fail at corporate guidelines it seems :P

Claire: What do you have against Mandatory Fun Day? Todd: Okay, you sit down to read your website, and you're enjoying your entire thing, right? And then there's the Mandatory-freaking-Fun-Day, bottom right hand corner, just waiting to suck. And it's the last thing you read, so it spoils everything you read before it. Claire: You could just not read it. Todd: I hate it, yet I'm uncontrollably drawn to it.

This can be found in Florence, Kentucky. (just south of Cincinnati) The water tower is located in front of the Florence Mall. It used to say Florence Mall but it was illegal to advertise on public structures so they changed it to the above picture.

Does anyone actually find MFD funny? Anyone at all? I'm serious here.

  • (cs) in reply to Siloria

Yes. There are some who do.

MFD goes away and the, what I consider fun, blank strips go away with it. I'm amazed by how bored some people must be to create spoof comics purely to insult the work of this artist.

Oh, and I read the comments for the few good ones that are either constructive or funny, not for the "OMG I FKN HATE THIS" ones that are wastes of HD space.

    • Thank you

I hope the comic has ben removed because was bad, was hard to create, and whas mixed with the real normal content of the website, lowering the quality, and not because most people poked fun about the ultra low quality of it.

It whas fun to poke about his low quality. But It was lowering the general quality of the site.

Could have removed, or moved to a side of the site (as a result: much more optional than now). Sites like OSNews have the comic in a side.

And It whas because it whas bad. The same way the old thedailywtf forum software was crap eons ago, and got replaced by other, and by other, and finnally by this one, that suck less.

If the "artist" want to continue with his efforts, I hope the guy has luck in his search the appropiate public.

I suggest him some VB forum.

    Siloria:
When did more content, especially content that encourages user feedback, become a bad thing?
The problem is that the user feedback itself has become tiresome and stale. MFD doesn't suck as much (but still is horrible), so it's not as easy to make fun of it, and so we've degraded to having our own recycled jokes and self-parodies that pat themselves on the back for their cleverness, but which really aren't that clever anymore. The most frightening thing is the idea that since MFD has inspired so much reaction, then it is somehow a success.

You know what they discuss at the xkcd forums? The comic. They don't make fun of it, they discuss it. How it's true, how it's not, how it affects someone personally. If MFD were a good comic, we could do that here, but alas.

As for just not reading it, it's like a car wreck. You may not want to look, but you have to. All in all this whole thing is a distraction to the site that we frankly can do without.

MFD has barely made a negative reaction: just by a handful of people that hate it that are very vocal about it, mostly. And generally, most of their comics were far, far worse.

If you want to get people to discuss the comic like on xkcd, you have to weed out the babies and then let it get established, first. I mean, really, people are actually threatening not to come to the site anymore because they can't handle scrolling past something they don't like? Give me a fucking break.

And no, you don't have to look. You do it on your own accord.

    Epic cornflake finale FTW.

Astute readers would notice the glancing reference to "Cheerios". Is this a sign that cornflakes guy has a spinoff series in the works?

    Stay tuned.

And no, you don't have to look. You do it on your own accord.
Okay, from a strictly literal standpoint, then of course, everything a person chooses to do is of their own accord.

A car wreck is just the go-to example when describing that universal morbid curiosity that seems to compel one to investigate things of a gruesome nature. Maybe it's less prevalent in you, but I'd wager you knew what I was talking about.

MFD has barely made a negative reaction: just by a handful of people that hate it that are very vocal about it, mostly. And generally, most of their comics were far, far worse.
I believe the reaction was representative of the readership. If there are hordes of readers who love it, then why don't they speak up? The best comment I ever read was "This isn't funny, but hang in there and maybe you'll get better."

I agree that many of the reader-submitted comics were just as bad as or worse than MFD. That's exactly my point. You say that MFD "encourages user feedback," but the only feedback allowed are the mostly unfunny comics mocking MFD.

If you want to get people to discuss the comic like on xkcd, you have to weed out the babies and then let it get established, first. I mean, really, people are actually threatening not to come to the site anymore because they can't handle scrolling past something they don't like?
(I never said anything about quitting the site.)

I have a pretty well developed sense of humor. Like anybody, there are some forms of humor that I don't find funny, but it usually isn't from not getting what the joke is supposed to be. Thus far, I have yet to see the spark that shows there is any real potential in MFD. Its observations just aren't that insightful; its "jokes" are flat.

Maybe letting it get established would help, as you say, but I am very doubtful. I also don't think I'm being hasty; we've seen a big enough sample that we should have seen the spark several times by now, and not just in a "that didn't suck as much as usual" kind of way. I'm not intending to put down the author--I could hardly do better. But I'm not trying to, either.

    Addendum (2008-04-02 23:51):

    Actually, I didn't say that.

As far as the car wreck and you not looking: in the case of a car wreck you also have that choice. Morbid curiosity does a fan sometimes make!

This is the daily wtf. People come here to read WTF's. And you ask why people come to the comic to read it? Is like asking why people eat pizza in pizza hut, or eat chicken in KFC.

  • (cs) in reply to Siloria

MFD is funny. The replies ARE funny. Even the replies that do nothing but complain ARE funny.

Especially the one with point by point ANALysis of MFD and other comics.

Now the first lot are done, everyone should give themselves a pat on the back, especially those who spend hours of their time drawing their complaints!

There's the real WTF. If you really wanted to complain, you would have wrote some text. You didn't. You didn't make a huge point complaining in image format either. Sorry.

Strike us down and we will grow stronger, MFD must live on, or else we will only EVER reply to ALL the articles in badly drawn comic format.

    Alternatively, DFRI!

    Cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes cornflakes!

Thank you, cornflakes guy, for making season 1 of MFD funny.

  • (cs) in reply to Siloria

There is a significant difference between turning to look at a car wreck and stopping, getting out of your car, and berating the driver (or their corpse) for their perceived lack of driving skills.

Some of the MFDs have just plain sucked but even in those cases the user feedback was funny. I would be willing to bet that you won't have to be attracted to something you hate so much in the future as it has become popular to complain about this comic on these forums.

It's much easier to destroy than it is to create after all, easier to criticize than to be productive.

KEEP MFD ALIVE! There ARE some who enjoy it.
