Boy, what a quiet forum. You'd think people all have lives or something.

Well it can't be that... Maybe they all have their computers unplugged to put in the video cards they got for Christmas?

Have the pleasure to say that I had several bosses like that (they are too pathetic to be called CEOs)... I disagree: those kind of speeches (via emails, smss, late phonecalls, instant messaging, and any other kind of communication) is highly motivating. I can assure you each time I had one of those, I was soooo motivated to get another job (and sink that company, if I was able to xP ).

Merry Xmas and other pagan festivities!

PS: What's the big deal about being first? Don't get it. I'm a proud non-first. xD

Any self-respecting IT person with a life should be fired in quite a spectacular fashion, the rest of us are trying to accomplish something here.

Funny, I got to do just that today. Then I got to do it again to put the old one back in when the new one didn't work because my box is a piece of crap.

I had to do that with a RAM module last week as well, when memtest86 turned up two bad locations.  I went from a gig and a half to one gig.  Not a huge deal, but it could have been better.

Funny, I had a boss like that once. I worked for 5 years to set up an IT department in a company. which paid off quite nicely - 4x increase in sales efficiency (I'm not kidding!) Then we got a new general manager who, in turn, didn't get computers. And what she didn't get, couldn't be useful, now could it? So my reward after all the work was a big kick in the ass. It was a nice public spectacle, too.

Whithin a year, the company sunk; my former coworkers praised me for my "intuition". Read: being the first rat to leave the boat. Talk about motivators...

Happy holidays, everyone.

I realize this is the stuff of fantasy, but, wouldn't it be cool if every single employee who received that email had the guts to come forward and say:

You got me. I did it. Go ahead and fire me so you can go on doing things like cutting pay, laying off people, forcing people to work unpaid overtime, etc.

That would be so great... all the employees standing up "I am spartakus" style! ha ha.  I'm sure any CEO like this has relatives employed at the company in high-up positions they don't deserve, so we can only hope that it was that very relative that made this comment.   That would be great, to see him or her have to fire their own relative in a huge mess that would spill over into their personal lives.

The person who said it's a bad place to work probably has already tried (in vain of course) to tell anyone else who would listen about their issues, and gotten no response, and so now they're trying to save people from boarding a sinking ship.  I know it's wrong to talk bad about where you are currently employed, but what in the world was this person thinking with that email?  They must know that their only recruiting strategy is to lie and say that everything's fine.  At least with a real company, they understand they have critics even at their own workplace... what a tool!

Ohhh yes. That Motivator would definitely motivate me. Motivate me ... to post that on the local newspaper and forward it on to every single headhunter nationwide.

Then I would watch how such CEO would get fired in a very "spectacular manner" for the PR disaster...

Ah, if only 'twere thus...more like he'd get carte blanche from the Board to clean house, and do so.

(Not that I disagree with your sentiment, just too cynical to believe things would work that rationally...)

I think you're a few decimal places off with, "1MB".

Ummm.

 Eek!

The sad thing is, around half the middle managers in IT react like this.

 Possibly
the saddest thing is (at least for me): I'm beginning to appreciate the
tendency for companies to hire junior officers from the Marines because
"they know how to motivate people, and get things done."

Now, Children, what's that sound? Can you say "My Lai?"

Well
done.  Hug each other, and we can get back to making this company
the best it can be.  After all, we're all trying to accomplish
something here.

(And do please take the time to read the corporate statement if you're not entirely sure what we all want to accomplish.)

I think you're a few decimal places off with, "1MB".

The 370 could address 16 MB so a 1MB system was feasible.  16 boxes, each the size of a refrigerator, would have done it (8 stretching to the left of the CPU, 8 stretching behind it).
