Actually it's a WTF for any modern software person to say that. How in the world can you consider Smalltalk, which gave us so much of what we use in so many different languages today, to be a WTF?

It's not out of tips and tricks, it's out of tips and is now moving on to the tricks.

If we're going to flame languages, can we at least stick to VBasic?

Personally I'll stick to flaming NatStar. As in "flaming NatStar, you'll never believe..."

Anybody care to admit to having used it?

Something tells me that CAPTCHA is indicative of the material being downloaded. Just sayin'.

Also, TRWTF is that MFD isn't running. I need my reader comics, man!

I'm just wondering what the CAPTCHA would offer if one were a Premium User, rather than a sad lonely broke person huddling under a sweaty duvet in a rancid freezing bed-sit.

I don't remember where I got it from, but I this this CAPTCHA beats the "WANK" one.

Select Cancel

2008-04-25 03:03 • by Kasper (unregistered)
The purpose of the Select Cancel seems obvious to me. The Define button is selected when the dialogue is opened, so if you want to choose define you can just press enter, and don't have to use the mouse. Now some users might rather have wanted the Cancel button to be the one choosen such that it could be activated with a single keypress. That is why there is a Select Cancel button. If you click Select Cancel, the Cancel button will be selected, and you can activate it using enter without touching the mouse. And you will still only have pressed one key. Clever.

Ha. Random numbers are fun.

I re-wrote the jcaptcha routine last month.

Test and/or download it there.

Enjoy !

From reading the dialogue, I assume "Select Cancel" in the Smalltalk one was saying "Select the components that don't have the appropriate properties defined, and cancel the action".
So there's regular "Cancel" which just bails out entirely (oops, I didn't mean to do that), and then there's "Select Cancel" (Select the items with problems so I can fix them and try again).

So "Select Cancel" is just a poor choice of wording.

Of course, TRWTF is that people assume Smalltalk is some crusty old dead language like COBOL, just because it's "Old". Not only is Smalltalk where most of todays Object Oriented languages got their ideas from, and had a better IDE in 1980 than most languages have today (in fact, Smalltalk-80 was a better environment than most OSes provided well into the 90s), but it's also still going strong, and used by hobbyists and the worlds largest companies alike. It's just not a fad language any more.
