Where's this bus going, Mike C. ponders. Hopefully the driver knows. [expand full text]

It's funny; in Dutch 'file' means 'traffic congestion'.

For the curious: error 12029 is more commonly referred to as "A connection with the server could not be established" (ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT).

As a former bus driver, I can tell you that those displays are some of the buggiest, most unreliable technology in the entire universe.

Since it's possible to create one's own custom display messages on many printers, I have to give a big thumbs-down to the printer one.

A bus driver who now writes code?
Did you OPTIMIZE your route?
Did you need to INSTALL DRIVERS?
Did you experience many CRASHES?
How did you MANAGE RESOURCES?

TRWTF is that someone made up a envelope size named "Monarch".

The printer one is no surprise

You can find a perl script to change it to anything you want. On April Fools the printers in my office said:

- Say Please!
- Insert Coin
- Replace Beef Cartridge

and when someone put something through the scanner:

- Om Nom Nom!

I'm still thinking of ones for next year.

The HP Laserjet can actually have the front panel message set to anything you want, a place I left two years ago still has a printer with my 'printer control' test message of "We're watching you, Howard" on it. Not sure they still have the Project Manager the message was directed at, though.

Monarch is a standard name for the paper size 7¼ × 10½ inches or 184 × 267 mm.

Yup. I did the same thing for April Fools'. Just connected a socket using C# and sent the PJL RDYMSG, bla bla bla. Anyhow, I had it say a variety of things including:

I'm So Hungry
Go Away
Please, Not Now
I Require Cake
Error Code 042
Please Wait...

"I'm So Hungry" got someone to open up the tray to check if it was out of paper.

"Please Wait..." caused nearly caused someone to call the printing service after he waited for nearly ten minutes at the printer.

I'm still changing the message every hour or so... The problem is, I've never been very clever and I'm getting less and less clever.

No crashes, but I did install more than one driver in my day...

I'm surprised you couldn't come up with anything about DISPATCHERS or SERIAL BUSES.

Perl script? You can do it by sending a text print job with a control string at the start (published on the HP website).
Or in the case of newer printers... Just go to the web interface and set it there.

Also, a simple April Fool's joke with them... Make it say "OUT OF ORDER"... Or for the pesky printers that never work, something like "Today I work"

Except for routes that stop at subway stations, in which case one would use GOSUB.

That bus might use the same display software as the New Flyers that got delivered to Vancouver BC. When ever the bus changes its front display to "SORRY NOT IN SERVICE" the back display which normally displays route number becomes "CHEC" (there's not enough room at the font to display more). Now that makes somewhat more sense. Of course the old ones just blank the back display when there's no route number associated with a front display.

I think loose cropping on screen shots is a good practice. There are lots of less-technical people that have a hard time telling a screen cap from the real thing. I've even had a few double-takes myself.

Do you have to beat this printer up with the baseball bat of her Majesty or will a normal baseball bat suffice? Can you dispose this printer on any field or does it have to be the garden of the Buckingham Palace?

just because no one seems to have done it before: Alt+PrtScr and you don't have to botch a crop job. And save your image as PNG while you're at it, even Paint can do this. JPEG screenshots of text messages are an insult to any quality TFT panel.

Double Elephant, foolscap, and all the rest of it is so last millenium. There is a very slight WTF that a whole bunch of illiterate philistines are still measuring things with "Imperial" units several hundred years after fighting a war against the imperialists who imposed this stupidness on them.

Paper sizes begin with an "A"! (Or, if you write in Kanji for a significant part of your working day, a "B".) That is
all there is to it.
