These darn CAPTCHA things tend to make the end users' life a true P.I.T.A! To make the user interface more fluent, I would suggest implementing a javascript-based OCR to read the CAPTCHA and fill in the value to the textbox so that he user only needs to verify that the captcha is right and click the submit button.

Yeah! Best way is:

Try this on a production enviroment... you'll be DOOM (Cptch)

That Captcha looks like it was intercepted by a business analyst who likely decided that a bot-safe captcha would be too difficult to read by the users and 'could we just make it some text, mmkay?'

Have a look at that captcha : http://www.jvc.co.uk/contact-brochure.php

On a more serious note, I'm the one in charge of this website, and we decided to not set up the full captcha (with color and distortion) as long as the spam level was low... Once the spam is too much important, we'll add more colours, fonts, and distortion. That way, captcha are still easy for humans, and bots will have to learn how to defeat the captcha more than one time. Our motto is "do not show all your weapons at one time".

Cheers !

is much shorter. If you don't have pkill, remember awk does regex'es as well, grep is just wasted.

ps -ef | awk '/[i]nit/{print $2}' | xargs kill
And of course, if you want real init, it's always pid 1, so
kill 1

Speaking of the best way to kill processes, and mentioning DOOM. Have you ever played with this http://psdoom.sourceforge.net/? It is very entertaining and has can have some interesting results when the prong process gets in the way.

If you're just using the CAPTCHA to prevent spam, then this is actually a perfectly valid strategy, although in most cases the JS also hides the entire CAPTCHA entry form. Most bots and spam engines don't parse JavaScript for very practical reasons, so the JS doesn't really help them, and for users using lynx or Netscape Communicator or some other stupid downlevel browser, it degrades gracefully.

Of course the JavaScript isn't actually doing OCR - it's generated on the server-side along with the CAPTCHA itself, so it's a "hard-coded" value by the time it reaches the client. If the spammers somehow figure out the script and start parsing it, it's not too hard to slightly alter the script to throw them off (or better, crash their engine - that's one reason why they don't parse JS in the first place).

Marat R. is pretty excited about features coming in the next version of JMeter. Like, for example, being able to exit the software.

Wow, I usually have the opposite issue: I'll have "features" throughout the code that cause the software to exit, even when the user didn't know yet that he wanted to.

Well, as long as it is a feature, I guess that is acceptable as well. But ANY user interaction and thats it, idea goes out the garbage.

An easily-read captcha isn't necessarily a bad thing....

Jeff Atwood has used the word "orange" in an old english text font as his captcha for years. He discusses the effectiveness of captchas here: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000712.html

Re: Your CAPTCHA Hates You

Some captchas drive it far too far.

Characters are resized, moved, bent, rotated and overlap ... and don't have any meaning at all.

x9Xg is easily readable in a clear font, but above methods applied, you can't distinguish lower g and 9, upper and lowercase X and so on.

Today I received a password on my mobile, which contained a V which looked like an U.
No captcha at all, but since it was random digits and characters, it wasn't obvious.

Of course I never had problems when the Character was used in a Word like Virginie or Ulrike.

Not all all. Student code is off limits which is understandable because they are learning. Having marked student assignments myself, this is a good rule as I could give this site enough content to last the next 10 years :-)

We shouldn't accept WTF code from open-source projects simply because the source is open (and presumably free), I know I use them for business critical stuff - I've even donated to some projects - so why would should they be exempt?

Aside from providing a bit of amusement, this site also acts as a learning tool, so if a crazy bit of code is in an open-source project - maybe someone here will see it and they learn from it.

Finally, half the point of this site is making fun of the bigger WTFs that get posted as a better solution to the actual WTF. So it shouldn't reflect to badly on these projects anyway

You can't kill the init process on any modern UNIX-like system that I'm aware of.

The most efficient way to make sure your process (and anyone else's) is dead is to simply issue the command "kill -9 -1" as root. Simple, effective, and portable.

That depends on what your init process _is_. Try and boot your kernel with init=/bin/sh, and then try to CTRL+D out of it.

Violà, you have a "Kernel Panic: Attempt to kill init!" on your hands and your machine frozen.
