Comment On when programmers change professions

Even at The Daily WTF, it's important to have a break from the technical stuff.  So today we have a snapshot from Steve Dunn,  who captured this interesting scene outside of a cinema in Essex, UK. In case it's hard to tell, the yellow object is a trashcan about six to seven feet from the curb, made completely inaccessible by high hedges. It looks like some of the programmers featured on this site have started designing public amenities. [expand full text]

What is that anyway? If it is a dustbin then I don't see the problem. How hard can it be to stretch your arm a little.

That wouldnt be stretching your arm a little. Looks to me to be atleast 3 feet in, and since my arm span from finger to finger is about 6'5", that would be a hard reach given that over a foot of that is not my arms.

My guess is that it was there first then one of them artistic, form over function, folk decided to put the hedges there after.

At first glance I thought it was a newspaper kiosk thingy (the kind where you stick in a quarter, lift the door, and take out a paper)

I always try scoring basketball style even when the trash can is on the street. If I miss with this one I won't feel embarrased or oblidged to pick it back up

Damn right it was designed by a programmer! He realized that if you can't reach it to put trash in, you never have to worry about emptying it. Pretty efficient garbage collection scheme if you ask me.

You should be blaming the gardener. Probably when the trash can was installed there were no hedges. Then suddenly somebody decided to build one, but forgot to relocate the trash can.

Or perhaps, the hedge was not intended to be this big. When it was planted / maintained properly the hedges were small enough to allow access to the trash can. Then suddenly due to budget cuts they laid off the gardener ensuing in the current mess.
