2.9 was all about the MFD extras! Here's my faves:

    * coobird's interpretation in #207759 was sublime

    * #207749 by smileyface was the exact opposite of sublime

    * b0red's #207698 made me laugh and feel sad, all at once

    * bstorer's #207760 wins for not only a new character (yeah, Ratroy!) but a pretty solid punchline

    * And although there were no extras used, kudos to Xeron for getting the Best Heckler prize with #207563

Now let's see what you can do with this one (UPDATE: actually a blank one!).

Mini-Contest: I'll mail a WTF Sticker and an official award certificate (which may or may not actually be a post-it note that says "congrats!") to the winners. Assuming, of course, you haven't already gotten a sticker, you post with your TDWTF account, and you have access to the email account associated with it. If you won, please contact me with your mailing address if you'd like a WTF sticker.

It was actually funny!! Although that last pane was unnecessary, as someone else pointed out.

I found rancor death very satisfying.

    Ohhh! David Hasslehoff!!
  • Zylon 2008-07-24 10:33
I'm trying to figure out what the last panel is supposed to add to the joke. Heck, the first panel could go as well.
  • Zylon 2008-07-24 10:36
Agreed. Even the first frame could go too.
  • Outlaw Programmer 2008-07-24 10:38
I also agree. The comic itself isn't bad, the artwork isn't bad, but the "presentation" needs work. The last frame can definitely go. I like the first two frames, but I wonder if there is some way to shrink them and put them side by side.

You people are crazy, it needs all 4 panels. Without the first I'm asking "why is he driving to a computer store" and without the last I'm asking "what is going to happen now that he's driving up to all these guys".

Then again, here in NJ we're not too familiar with the drive-thru worker model found closer to the border

The last frame shows the prevalent sexism in the industry, since there were five people looking for work and Cobol Bill drives off with the four men and leaves the woman behind.
  • vindico 2008-07-24 12:27
Did you take those in Austin? I suppose you might have just pulled them off the web. There's a Home Depot in Austin that I immediately thought of when I read this cartoon, given that it looks just like these photos. Plus there's a "La Ley" radio there.
  • NCBloodhound 2008-07-24 12:51
There is no austin in California.... :)
  • YAYitsAndrew 2008-07-24 13:01
First become an american citizen. Then I'll give a damn about the challenges faced by your socio-economic group.

Maybe I'm not well read on this subject. Isn't what the people in these photos doing illegal?

What? I've seen day laborers sitting outside waiting to be picked up in NJ before. It's pretty common everywhere in the US these days.

Both photos were just pulled off the web from different sources, the intent was just to make an overly obvious explanation of what I thought are the ideas behind the real comic. It was all done while writing code, there isn't much thought behind the words.

YAYitsAndrew: I'm a white guy from New England, I'm as far removed from this topic as anyone still in the USA could be.
And yep, I believe they're mostly illegal immigrants looking for under the table jobs, which by definition is a socio-economic group, albeit one not legally recognized.
(also, I can't help but see "Yay Tits" when I see your uname)

This picture improved my day immeasurably. Of course, the lavender flavoured rubber nails also ply our historical elephant breasticles since I saw it, but I consider that a small price to pay.

I'll be cringing in the corner over here if you need me...

I'd love to know how this would cause an aneurysm. An epileptic seizure in someone susceptible perhaps but not an aneurysm.

    I can't stop looking....
  • Ichabod 2008-07-29 07:11
Actually, no it's not: If you look closely you'l see that we can find every single cowboy in/on the truck but the woman and the mustached one, now either of them should be the one climbing in head-first, while the other, not seen leaving the premises, is probably already aboard, supposedly lying flat. I leave the rest to your imagination...
  • timofei 2008-07-29 08:11
If you take away the first and last frame, then it would be too obvious that the joke is stolen from Venture Brothers.
  • Adam 2008-07-29 08:35
Why do these links on the cartoon threads always lead to disjointed conversations? Are comments deleted or something? Isn't there supposed to be a cartoon contest entry here?
