I don't get whether the WTF in the last picture is that some messages are in Czech although the environment is in English, that they are displayed in windows-1252 instead of windows-1250, or that "desktop" should translate as "plocha".

Windows does go funny when you have more than one language on there, you can get some really strange things. There is some library of translations somewhere, so when you use windows supplied widgets you get the translation I think.

Just guessing, but these things tend to be literal translations, so I would guess it is asking you if you would like an icon on the desktop, and/or an icon in the start menu.

I think the more pressing question is: Is it 'yes' or 'no'...

But how does "ø" fit into that? To the best of my knowledge, that's only used for Danish, Norwegian and Faeroese (as a letter, that is).

It's in Czech language (with wrong font codepage) and it asks if it should create icons on the desktop and in the menu... obviously translation is missing or mixed up :-)

That’s because Windows messed up the encodings and displayed ‘ø’ where it should have displayed ‘ř’.

If you want to have an agent with "clean access", then you must wash your text strings until they are secure and contain no compromising information.

I'm not sure what "desktopu" means, but "sekci" looks strangely familiar.

The "... desktopu" message should read "Vytvořit ikonu na desktopu"; I the installer must be accessing messages translated into Czech and it's not even unicode :(

It's probably something written in Borland Paradox for Windows, or a utility for working with a Borland BDE database (commonly called 'Paradox' tables).

Paradox and the BDE have been deprecated for over a decade now but the goddam stuff just won't die.

"desktopu" is in Czech. Also the dialog is partly in English and partly (the bottom part) in Czech.

The Google one is nothing special. It does that quite often. The scary thing is when every photo comes up as <insert your most hated politician here>.

It looks like the installer is Inno Setup, which is an ANSI application. The strings were written in cp1250, but are displayed as cp1252.

the paradox one is boring, it is probably a user error anyway - he selected that weird language himself. it's also obvious what it means even without knowing the language: create icon a) on desktop b) in quick launch

the dialog box is asking:
"Will you click 'No'?"
now, how to answer without having a brain meltdown...

Heh, the paradox installer screen is in Czech and these are those classical questions (Do you want to create an icon on desktop etc...)

It also has a bad encoding. Some of those strange characters actually do not exist in Czech.

Not knowing Czech, or Slavic languages in general, I'd appreciate further detail on the declensions/genders of words like ikon/ikona.

The whole PIE concept of "motion towards" has always struck me as a bit rickety. Accusative? Dative? Occasionally, absolute? (That's just Latin and Greek: throw in Sanskrit variants as applicable.)

Anyway, I think what you really want here, just for clarity's sake, you understand, is the Vocative:

"O User, dost thou wish to create an /icon[u pipe a, damn keyboard)]*/ on the desktop?"

The absence of a button saying "Well, since you asked me so nicely, I'd be much obliged" is clearly the multi-lingual WTF here.

PS An ugly verb went up to a noun in the bar and asked if it could go back to/with/from/by his/her/its place for a little adjective.
