Comment On Hypocrisy

"When writing validation scripts, it's easy to forget that some fields (company name, for example) might actually need a mix of letters and numbers," Laurie Denness writes, "you'd think some companies would be better at remembering that than others." [expand full text]

I never click the links, though I do remember many years ago having some fun with a spammer. I had a bit of time to spare so I went to the website being spamvertized.A bit of poking around and I found their order database, unencrypted.
So I downloaded it.
In amongst all the "Die Fscking Spammer" comments, there were a depressingly high number of people who had actually placed orders, complete with their credit card info.
I ended up writing a small script that parsed the file, and sent e-mails (from an anonymous account!) containing their own order information to each of the people who placed orders, along with a note advising them never to buy from spammers...
Fun times...

In regards to that instruction manual, I think it's an actual direct translation of whatever language it was originally written in.

I remember going to my parents' house and seeing that they had some Chinese DVDs with accompanying English descriptions on the back of them. They were completely nonsensical and absolutely hilarious. I asked my dad about them and after he looked at them a bit, it turns out that the English descriptions were a direct word for word translation of the Chinese descriptions. Because the languages differ so much between structure and word use, it made the English translation completely useless.

With all the fancy internet translation tools out there now, I have a feeling that companies are starting to use those instead of actually hiring someone to do the translations thinking they can cut costs.

Is it just me or do you think instruction manuals have actually gotten worse over the past few years?

Actually, i remember that studies have shown that even negative attention is better than indifference. And this applies to publicity too...

I think the 3ware one is the best. I love it because the rule they check against is a good rule that would make sense, but they don't obey it themselves. I think the law should require company and brand names to stick to [A-Z][a-z]{5,} or something like that. Perhaps mix in accents for non-English languages, but this general pattern.
