Comment On Souvenir Potpourri: Random Assortment Transfer

Ever since the first Free Sticker Week ended back in February '07, I've been sending out WTF Stickers to anyone that mailed me a SASE or a small Souvenir. Nothing specific, per the instructions page, "anything will do." Well, here goes anything, yet again! (first one here, second one here) [expand full text]

I don't understand how you colonial Americans can be so disrespectfull to your monarch. OF COURSE the Queen is on all the currency, She is a direct decendant of God. Way more awesome than who ever you have on your flimsy bills.

God save the Queen!

I can remember when they phased out the old shilling and two-shilling coins in the UK, which is when we stopped having coins with the old king's head on. Actually, that was only 15 years ago despite the king dying in the early 1950s...

I miss the NZ 5c coins (out of circulation year before last) and the 1 & 2c coins (out of circulation about 12 years ago).

And hey, we may have the queen on all our coins, but we've got the first guy to climb Everest on our $5 notes...

It's a common mistake, but that's Jesus Christ you're thinking of. The Queen is not descended from God, she is simply chosen by God. But she is way more awesome than anyone on American money, given she's technically ruled the entire commonwealth for 55 years. That's a lot of landmass, and a very long time.

If you switch your keyboard layout to Polish (Programmers) you have the usual US layout but can enter ł by typing AltGr+l (or Ctrl+Alt+l). I think I'd have abandoned copy and paste by the third ł :)

It looks like the plastic pig is actually a game piece from the game Pass the Pigs, a dice game played with pig-shaped dice. My aunt and I used to play it all the time when I was a kid.

Pass The Pigs is a sleeper hit. Try it. It sounds so dumb but with a group of 4-5 people it's amazingly fun.

The chocolate/wafer-based bars made in Poland are, IMHO, seriously blowing the U.S. "favorites" out of the water.

Even the shitty Polish wafers or chocolates seem to be better than anything Hershey has ever made. Their "market research" must be *way* off, since everyone I've asked not only liked Polish chocolates/wafers better, but they frequently ask for more of it. And they do admit that Hershey tastes like crap, in comparison. The biggest problem with U.S. "sweets" market is that it got so used to the crap that's peddled here, that they just don't know anything better exists.

I guess I'll have some Polish hazelnut chocolate going your way, Alex.

Cheers, Kuba

Well...
I use a French/Belgium kb layout at work, French/France at home, and Polish/programmers whenever I feel like it.
Useless information: The AltGr+letter combination was criticized for making people press 2-3 keys at the same time. There were several other systems, which... died, because nobody liked the fact that they crippled the keyboard. Now, you have a ż and a ź letter on a polish keyboard. While the first one uses an AltGr+z (as you'd expect), the latter needs an AltGr+x.

Either that or he was referring to a much lesser know Ruby team, (competing for the Rails Cup, perhaps?) which would be quite appropriate to the site as I'm willing to bet most of us have more experience with Ruby than Rugby...

My Norwegian Boss and his British wife use to bring back chocolate from UK. They said it was so much better than American chocolate.

Since I'm an American, I respectfully disagreed until I tried some their chocolate from the UK. I changed my mind; I think UK chocolate is a lot better than American chocolate. I think it's because Hershey puts coco butter in their chocolate to make the chocolate melt at body temperature.

Anyway, America make great technology, but really shitty chocolate.

Probably depends where you went to school. Many English geeks will have been subjected to several years of rugby at High School (although probably the wussy Union version, rather than the gritty northern League version). Being only vaguely aware of Ruby, and having no direct experience with it, I personally am considerably more familiar with Rugby (I was always just good enough to be considered for the school team, but never quite good enough to get into it).

If anyone's curious about what the "Avalanche of Pancakes" clipping reads, here it is, after ~20 minutes of squinting at the photo.

It's a clipping from my university's student newspaper, and it was a little filler for the extra space at the end of the classifieds, so it's normally really random and contains inside jokes about the editors, but this one was lengthier and interesting. From the hole in the top of the clipping you may guess that I've had it tacked up behind my desk for a little while before I mailed it in.

===

The pint glass struck the table with a crack, in the process, dragging the recruit's attention from his introspective musings back to the man sitting across the table from him. This was stuff of the legends. One of the select few that had seen action, and had returned with the proof of the horrors he had seen.

"What's it like?" asked the first man, his eyes widening as they focused on the grizzled visage of the vet.

"It's four years of hell, young blood. Classes. Exams. The grueling depression that comes from knowing that the best years of your youth will be spent in a molded plastic seat while staring at the dull matte of lined notepaper," growled the veteran, his voice changed by years of coffee abuse. "Do you think you're ready for that, newbie?"

The recruit aimed to still his shaking hands by wrapping them around his unfinished libation. The glass was warm to the touch, but did nothing to calm his nerves. "It can't be that bad, right? It's just school."

The rookie's words were cut short when the vet took a firm hold of his collar. The old man's voice was low, but his eyes pierced the boy with a wild, crazed glare. "The human body can go eleven days without sleep, boy. But it does things to you. It changes you. A man sees things that shouldn't be. Are you willing to let go of your sanity for a term paper, young blood? Are you ready for that?"

"I've always done well in high scho-"

The vet's grip tightened. "I know a man who thought he could do it. The best grades. The best training. This was a man who ate up commies and sh*t out freedom. He lasted a week."

"What happened to him?"

"You're looking at him, billy boy. You're looking at him."

You have to put cocoa butter in chocolate, otherwise you only have cocoa. Chocolate is made up of: cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar (including milk sugars, for milk chocolate)
