I am Polish, and I liked "finlandese" the most :) BTW zoo in Wroclaw is one of the biggest such places in Europe. Never been there, but I believe it's definitely worth seeing. At least that's what they say. And yes, we do have other cities in Poland. Not so much, but still...

So, who is that dude with funky hairdo and beanie hat in the 10 zloty bill anyway? And what did he achieve in order to get printed on money?

His name is printed on the left side of portrait (Mieszko I). He was a ruler of Poland until year 992. As he was not crowned, so techically he was not a king. He is responsible for bringing oficially christianity to Poland in year 966 (probably to prevent war with Germans).

I am from Poland was happy to see things from my country. Now I am crying because of trying to not LOL in work while reading this post and comments about polish things. They're great! Comments of course. ;) Especially this about one grosz.

Maybe a little anecdote about our littlest coin. In junior school I have a pal, who have a fantastic idea to gather it. After about a year he has 2-litres jar of coins. After long day counting he realized, that there is - if I remember right - about 700 coins, so 7 zlotys. So - for 2 litres of one grosz coin and one year of gathering he could buy two beers. Or better - because of his age - three tables of chocolate.

He never get similar idea again. :)

    Regards!

Of course, it's only usual if you live in the US. Which I don't. And I quite like the usual UK layout, especially since I get an actual pound sign (£) when I key SHIFT-3
Oh look, we found someone who programs in C-Pound.
Nonononono.. I program in C-Hash. Look -> C#. That's a hash sign (not a pound sign, as the Americans would have us believe). If I programmed in C-pound the Language Name would be C£. I mean, duh!

My Norwegian Boss and his British wife use to bring back chocolate from UK. They said it was so much better than American chocolate.

Since I'm an American, I respectfully disagreed until I tried some their chocolate from the UK. I changed my mind; I think UK chocolate is a lot better than American chocolate. I think it's because Hershey puts coco butter in their chocolate to make the chocolate melt at body temperature.

Anyway, America make great technology, but really shitty chocolate.

Great technology? Do you not need to go through a switchboard anymore in order to make a phone call? And BTW British chocolate must be crap (well, I actually found more toffees and such than chocolate in or from UK). The Real What A Chocolate comes from Belgium. Trust me, my friend, and send me the chocz, plz.

"PALAUTETAAN: Ei noudettu" means that letter reached its destination, but was never picked up from the post office.

Most of the international mail needs to be picked up from the local post office if it has been sent using low priority mail at the originating country.

Local post office holds it for two weeks and returns it automatically after that.

Erm... British chocolate must be crap... why? Do you intend to give us a reason, or is this just racism / xenophobia for the sake of it? Don't blame the British for your inability to recognise chocolate...

I think you're reading the chart in reverse. The złoty used to be upwards of 4 zł / 1 usd a few years back - but these days it's closer to 2 zł / 1 usd. So keeping the currency around makes perfect sense. :)

I remember in 1985 1 DM was worth 800+ Zlotys (does that come from slotty?). I wonder what they did to bring it's value up by more than a factor 100 in some 20 years, hmmm. Maybe stolen cars play a role...?

well, they just cut 4 Zeros of ;) "As a result of hyperinflation in the early 1990s, the currency underwent redenomination. Thus, on January 1, 1995, 10 000 old złotych (PLZ) became one new złoty (PLN)."

so in fact the value didn't go up by factor 100, but it went down by factor 100

If the Queen of New Zealand is anything like the Queen of Canada (I have noticed a certain resemblance), she is the personal manifestation of the sovereign nation. Legally, she is New Zealand.

However, if she is anything like the Queen of Canada, she spends 99% of the time not existing. She is off embodying other things. There are lots of things in need of bodies that don't have their own, it seems. As a result, should she suddenly start existing again, it is absolutely essential that we have her likeness readily available for verification.

The Queen of Canada can be identified in the field by folding her face along a certain line. If the Queen's face becomes the Queen's bum, it's the genuine article. I am sure they have a similar method in NZ.

No kidding. When you have a queen (or king) she (he) is required to be the "head" on all coins. This has been true since at least AD 1. Check any British, Canadian, or Australian coin. That's just the way it is.
Leaving aside the incredibly sweeping statement, and the tiny solecism of specifying AD 1 as your start date, this is a misrepresentation for two reasons:

    (1) There is no actual requirement for this; it simply used to make political and fiscal sense (see Sir Isaac Newton and his rather drastic response to forgers whilst head of the Royal Mint). Now it's just a cargo-cult thing. Tony Benn, when head of the GPO, tried to get the queen's head off British stamps, but was blocked by the Civil Service for no particularly good reason except that it was a silly, pointless, petty and vindictive idea.

(2)It doesn't really work for Edward VIII. Unless you have a huge stash of Edward VIII pennies that you're willing to share with me.

I only bring this up so that I can quote one of my favourite political jokes: when Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson were making the beast with two backs, they were known as "Edward the Eighth and Wallis the Seven-Eighths..."
