Comment On Announcement: Content Survey Results

Thank you all for participating in last week's survey! I crunched the numbers and read through the 150+ printed pages of comments, and learned some pretty neat things along the way: Quite a number of readers missed the invisible <AprilFools> tag, and hate the new4 name The Daily WTH. Not too many paid attention to the distinction between features (like Code SOD, Error'd, etc). The non-coders usually don't understand the code snippets, and they're OK with that. Some would prefer an explanation in the comments, though. The general consesus for the comic (MFD) was that, while the idea of having a comic here is good, MFD isn't quite "there" yet. It does show some potential, but in the mean time, the reader-submitted comics are "where it's at." There was also a lot of very helpful constructive critisism. Despite hating the content here, and especially disliking me, some of you still visit on regular basis and actually take the time to leave survey comments. I'm flattered. Especially by you, Survey Taker #2883: Alex, please stop trying to be funny. You are completely devoid of any sort of sense of humour and impervious to being told this. Your idea of an April Fool's joke was to pretend to rename the site what, three months after actually renaming it and renaming it back? That's not funny. You don't know what funny is. You don't get it, and no matter how much you're told, you *won't* get it. When three thousand people call you an ass, start looking for a saddle. I don't want your worthless prose, your insipid writing, or your mean-spirited forays into OS/platform wars. Basically, any time your personality creeps through, we all suffer. For those of you who asked about another programming contest: yes, soon! [expand full text]

Interesting observation about the pie chart depicting what country the votes came from:

The pie chunks are the exact same size as the average slice of apple pie taken during dessert in that country.

And on that note, it's a quite interesting to see that nearly 800 of you would rather commit suicide than see another comic posted here.

It would have been higher, if not for all the people who killed themselves anyway.

Woohoo! I can see myself in the csv file (there are only 5 people from my country, so it's quite easy).

"if you want to make an omelet, you have to kill a few people". There you go, trying to be funny again. Survey Taker #2883 is going to be angry.

CSV file -- nice. As we've all learned here, flat files are the ultimate way to store data.

Red = bad = 7
Blue = good = 1

My analysis of your data is mine and it is:
1) Half of the big roundish pie chart is blue and the rest is not and that's it.
2) The coloured strips are also rather blue, but the top of the MFD one is red probably regarding the suicides those 800 guys are about to commit.
3) There's a blank space in the lower right corner on the last picture.

On personal note I just wanted to add that this analysis is mine and belongs to me.

You should go ahead and run a second season of MFD. The whiners would commit suicide, and there would be less lame bitching in the comments of other TDWTF features.

I have to admit, while as I recall I voted "MFD sux" in the survey, it kinda grew on me. I would not mind seeing a new season, but please don't *force* us to post images as comments. Allow/encourage them, but don't make it (haha) Mandatory.

You mean so we can have page upon page of "this sux," "stop making comix," and "this sux harder than M$?"

I'd rather see somebody make a little effort to comment on it. Plus, the reader comics are usually amazing. In fact! I would like to see another season of MFD that was just as bad as the first, so more people will give it the MST3K treatment in comic form.

Come on, George. You can make up some original bad jokes.

No. There was a good reason to do that in the first place, and I'm sure it hasn't changed.

Also, the segments of the MFD line chart are thin at one end, much much bigger in the middle, and then thin again at the far end.

Once upon a time, there was an evil baron, Baron Aggregator who thought that all data should be represented as a single piegraph, he was much hated throughout the land, although he thought the opinions of 2 people were irrelevant. Then, one day, from the east, there rode on a mighty steed the triumphant Lord Demo-Graph, who slew the mighty baron with his mighty drilldown.

And there was much rejoicing.

CSV file? What about all those unfortunates that use comma as the decimal separator? Surely a semicolon separated version should be provided as well?

According to the data, there are 66(0.7%) people who never read the website (read freq = 0) yet still felt compelled to submit a survey. Of those 66, 3 people (4.5%) got on to say that MFD should be killed (gave it a 6).

Further, there appears to be 15 people who like to submit surveys without answering a single question.

Alex, please ignore any complaints that you are "completely devoid of any sort of sense of humour." A charge like that coming from a Cannuck or a Brit should be worn as a badge of honor. Heck, they don't even know how to spell "humor"!

Statistical analysis:

s1. Sum all values in B:I -> 169754
s2. Count all values in B:I -> 73520
s3. Divide s1/s2 -> 2.67
s4. Divide s2/s1 -> 0.37
s5. Divide s1/s2 -> .14
s6. Apply 'deviation' formula
aka. statistical number pulled out of one's ass
s3*2 - s4 - s5 -> 4.83
s7. Apply final filer for data distillation
aka. management one-figure statistic generator
(s1/s5)/v1/v2 -> 42.85
where v1 = 2^10 to adjust result into 'bytes'
and v2 = 3.14, everyone nees some PI(e)
s8. Finally, remove 2 significant digits,
to match original precision arriving
at final statistic value -> 42

Note, that obtained answer solves all known
problems and is answer to:
Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything

Note, 85.93% of all statistics are made up on the
spot, and another 64.13% after deliberate consideration.

I had to import the data in to Excel, then set that the first row was a date/time and then I could sucessfully import it in to Access. For kicks you understand.

Anyway, I now know that the 2 countries that hate MFD the most on average is Monaco and Iran. (Assuming ISO country codes).

Monaco: 7
Iran: 7
Netherlands Antilles: 6
Vietnam: 5.5
Venezuela: 5

Completely useless data

So I tore through and made note of two things:
1) The percentage of each country that voted "hate the most" on any given feature. This means, for example, the US cast 4,012 votes for MFD, 845 of them were "Really hate it, doesn't belong on WTF" giving the US a hate score of 21.06% for MFD. All data is included below.
2) The countries that hate each feature the most, with at least 5 votes. For each feature, I took the highest hate percent as the country that hates that feature the most. Only countries with at least 5 non-zero votes for that feature were counted, so MC doesn't count, since there was only 1 vote from that country, and it was a "hate" directed towards MFD.
3) Average hate level for each feature. Again, only countries with more than 5 votes counted so the 100% didn't throw off the results.

I would have preferred the lines of the CSV file to have been encapsulated in XML so that it'd be easier to work with. Everyone knows that CSV in XML works the best.

Oh Man! Americans are like the total sum of all the other countries. Don't you do any work? Nice to see 46 ES's who visit the site.

"...and no matter how much you're told, you *won't* get it."

I couldn't agree more, keep up the good work Alex :) Maybe you shouldn't let your mom (AKA #2883) post on TDWDF.

according to the data:

almost identical numbers of people like/dislike codesod and error'd - when grouping all the data together the breakdown of people choosing 1,2,3,4,5 has a correlation of 99.8997%.

However, when analysed on a per person basis, the correlation between the answers drops to 19.7919%.

So in plain English, codesod is just as popular as error'd, but not liked by the same people

I don't understand where some of these results are from. I mean, CA = California, IN = Indiana, DE = Delaware etc, but where the heck is GB and MK?

From looking at the pie charts, I have found the key ideal that all the nations can agree on: hating MFD. World peace, here we come!

Don't listen to survey taker #2883 Alex. Your personality and humor is what makes this site as great as it is.

I also thought your April Fool's joke was very funny.

Must be the great conglomerate states of the future of Georgia-Boston and Maryland-Kansas.

And on that note, it's a quite interesting to see that nearly 800 of you would rather commit suicide than see another comic posted here.

You should go ahead and run a second season of MFD. The whiners would commit suicide, and there would be less lame bitching in the comments of other TDWTF features.

I thought so, too. For a second. Then I realized they're only bragging. Pity, isn't it?

Data as a SQL file:

http://ralph.sleigh.googlepages.com/wtf.sql

Chart showing that people who dont like MFD also voted please no more

TRWTF is that those are the default excel colours and you can only change them to other ugly presets, no nice gradients.

And the pie chart colours are dumb, too.

If you don't start getting more humourous, I'm going to leave.

Really, I will.

Oh, I don't mind seeing another comic posted here.

I just don't want to see THAT comic posted here again.

CSV file -- nice. As we've all learned here, flat files are the ultimate way to store data.

CSV file? What about all those unfortunates that use comma as the decimal separator? Surely a semicolon separated version should be provided as well?

Easily handled with a trivial regexp. Unless you'd prefer it printed out on to a wooden table and submitted to a more rigorous and enterprisey transformation?

Maybe, like me, they read via RSS.

(I read via livejournal; cuts down on the number of sites I have to keep track of and such)
