    I find it easy to outperform Mustang and MX-5 drivers in my slowest-of-the-slow Jetta TDI even though I have an air leak in my fuel line that I can't be bothered to fix! Yeah, that's easy for me to say, having learnt to drive in the UK.

And then Microsoft adopted it, and got the whole concept massively wrong, and because of their unhealthy monopoly/monoculture status, polluted the entire industry's knowledge pool with this misbegotten interpretation, until now everyone thinks it was always nothing more than an in-band, redundant and inconsistent way of expressing typing metadata about a variable.

    Just one more example of how Microsoft's incompetence and greed do real measurable and genuine damage to the entire industry and to the sum total of human knowledge / cultural heritage of the whole human race... it was a useful concept once, now it's been broken. A pox on the bunch of them.

    Simonyi worked at MS at the time. It was the system programming group that got the wrong end of the stick and started using prefixes for variable types rather than the use of variables.

    MS tends to do things that are 'just good enough', which has worked really well for them in terms of business success. Maybe becoming a problem now they are trying to extend such old code into another O/S release though.

    Difficult as it will be for you to understand, the fact is I wasn't "attempting to pull a whoa-i'm-so-macho number", either. The guy mentioned a Miata, and then talked about how there wouldn't be room since it's a two-seater. Since I own a Miata, I responded with typical guy-type one-upmanship -- the same kind you encounter in any impromptu weekend neighborhood basketball game. "Hey, since you two can't handle it, I'll do it for you... there's only one person in my Miata."

    Then came the snide comments about the car, and about me being a poser, so I returned like for like. Nothing "I'm so macho" about it. Just some readers whose self-image was apparently threatened to the point that they went on the offensive.

    Addendum (2008-10-07 23:15): Just so you understand where I'm coming from: self-image problem == you, Dave. Why else would you be having a problem with the picture of me and my car? Why else would you feel the need to defend the interests of the cartoon anime princess you've been fighting for in the game all this time? Seriously... isn't it time to grow up, Dave?

    Why does anybody document the file history inside the source code? Use source control history.

    you'd be surprised how useful that can be, particularly when someone is looking at a large code base and says "why the hell did they do that?" Perhaps when you work on a project more than a couple thousand lines of code, and more than a year old, you'll understand.

    On a good IDE and source control, file compare takes 2 seconds.

    But, lazy people do more work.

    reminds me of an old online game i used to play: FLYFF (fly for fun). when played in Vista, sometimes the view would shake in a very annoying way...it only happened when one of the strange Pink trees was on the screen...they couldn't track down the glitch, so they replaced all the Pink trees with Green ones.

    Sounds like classic spaghetti code-every fix just broke something else until they removed half the game to make it stable 😅
