I don't see the problem with the do not call registry one. My guess is phone/fax refers to a fax machine that has a handset as well, and can make/receive calls. Since they don't have a separate checkbox for it, if you can receive calls on your "fax machine" you can just enter the same number in the box at the bottom. Fax spam happens.

Because you have to guess, that is the problem. It is a matter of wording. The question is phrased such that you would expect to have options to select either "Fax" or "Phone/Fax" rather than just a checkbox. It is not clear exactly what one is checking the box for or what one is indicating by not checking the box.

It seems fairly clear to me. Is this a fax or a phone/fax? Yes, this is a fax, tick. Yes, this is a phone/fax, tick. No, this is a phone, unticked.

Maybe a dropdown for "Type of line" would have made it absolutely clear with options "Phone", "Fax", "Both", but you have to be extremely picky to call this a WTF. It's suboptimal UX, but hardly a WTF.

  • Bonbon (unregistered) in reply to Nagesh

...also, having to provide a contact number if one registers a "phone/fax" is a bit... odd... it's a PHONE/fax, so presumably one could call the number and somehow get a human...

I disagree that you have to guess. You just have to think and then check the box if it is a fax or a phone/fax. No guessing is necessary...

  • croc (unregistered) in reply to Nagesh

I prefer to think de WTF is because we are asking to «please supply a phone number you can be contacted on»... It is as «DO NOT CALL registry» ...

  • Adam (unregistered) in reply to ojno

TRWTF is that the do not call registry is asking for a contact # where they can call you if (presumably) anyone has a problem not calling you.

"If registering a fax (this included phone/fax), please supply a phone number you can be contacted on:"

I thought that's what the joke was. The rest seemed fairly straightforward. Basically if the number involves faxing (so, either a pure fax or a phone/fax) tick the box, otherwise don't.

No, the problem is that you have to supply a number to be contacted at, when signing up for the do not contact list.

While that's probably the intent of the WTF, national Do Not Call registries are to prevent telemarketers, on pain of some fine, from calling the number on the registry.

It takes a case of galloping willful misunderstanding to believe that it means "the government" cannot call you.

To make a pie from scratch, you have to invent the universe.

To install GNOME 3 from scratch, you have to turn your distro into Slackware (with a few well-placed make && make install any distro will become just that).

That is to say, you are disgusting.

Fully agreed. Elevation data doesn't take into account bridges, buildings or any other man-made structure (or alien-made pyramids either). All that matters is the topology of the terrain.

A glitch in how Google Earth presents elevation data to the user. Close enough to the original phrasing.

A design limitation. A less-than-ideal user experience. An amusing glitch.

The iTunes one has to be a fake. Aside from the fact that the button doesn't actually tell you what pressing the button will do, it's not an action (in violation if the HIG) and it doesn't make sense in the context of the dialog. If iTunes is syncing, the iPod doesn't need to be formatted so it can be used with iTunes.

As far as entering a "contact number" when filling out the do not call registry, I only offer a suggestion: The phone number of the local politician (who write laws regarding said registry). Only then will it have any effect.

This being said from a person who has turned off the fax machine automatic answering to preserve the ink cartridge in the fax machine. And yes, it was already in a do not call list. FAX spammers don't seem to care.

It's actually very clear. There are two ways to use "or" and this is an example of the other way. It's not asking you to choose one of the two options; rather it is saying that the two options are equivalent.

It's definitely an amusing picture, but not really an "error'd" since it's impossible for Google Earth to detect the bridges and the correct height, let alone "cut out" the bridge sections, float them and then fill in the missing image data.
