The guy was a volunteer firefighter.
I'm a volunteer EMT, and likewise handle the tech stuff for my organization. Root passwords, account info, etc. is locked up in a bank safe deposit box along with everything else important... strict orders not to be opened unless I get hit by a bus... and also has the name and number of a co-worker who can make sense of it and recommend a freelancer if need be.
