    I think we have a winner! The 6 digit date format is a common thing and is something I've seen PLENTY of times for an id in a store's system for order numbers.

    I think an aircraft not taking off being analogous to that extra 0 is a bit extreme. A more accurate analogy would be an aircraft that flies fine but has a slight ding on the fuselage.

    Just thought of something. If the id number was a telephone number, then dividing by 10,000,000 would get the area code. It would make sense if the database originally was designed to track customers by their telephone number, and later on the capability to figure out the area code for geographic reasons was needed.
