    Now that's a rookie mistake, you've got to allow for different widths of browser window or it just looks a mess.

    This sort of oversight is why a lot of things end up here. You did remember leap years so there is that.

    Ah but have you tested the testing frameworks? In my codebase, we always test Mockito. The DAO test class is good place to stick these tests, since the DAO code is specifically written to be hard to test because you can't really know if it's going to get the right data out of the database without doing an end-to-end system test, so unit tests for that would be a waste of time.

    You cant really trust the assertions either, that's why we don't bother with them most of the time, just check the code all runs fine. If it was wrong it'd throw an exception right?

    We'll sometimes run sanity checks against a vendor library we're using to make sure that the interface we need does its job. And for really critical interfaces to vendor libraries, you bet we'll be testing that interface. Learned this the hard way after discovering a bug in a math library from Intel of all places - that was a hard one to track down. But this may be a bit overboard. Just a bit.

    I have to say, he does make one valid point: TRWTF here is that there is absolutely no limit (or at least no reasonable limit) on comment length, or even a limit on number of comments. Nothing stopping him from not only doing what he did once, but then again, and again, making the problem worse every time. This is clearly a massive oversight by the website admins.

    Aside for the actual article: Writing unit tests of an external framework makes sense if you want to know quickly if you can plug in a new version of a framework into your existing code without breaking it. Not saying that these unit tests make any sense (.NET has lots of tests), but unit tests for external frameworks in general are something that people should do.

    You don't need to test the framework to know that, though. If you have good test coverage, just run your tests. If everything passes, you're fine. And if you don't have good test coverage, I'd argue your time is better spent working on that than writing tests of 2nd or 3rd party code.

    Probably the conversion function is locale aware, so the code is actually checking if the system is able to convert a date from a given string. A properly written function would use an ambiguous date (e.g. 01-02-2014) and check if the month and day are in the expected positions after conversion, so 10-10-2014 is a bad choice. Locale depending (or even worst, heuristic) date parsing is the worst idea ever.
