Mild WTF: using the octal constant 01 instead of the dcimal constant 1.

I think you mean on the frist of this month.

I like that they used an octal constant, to give additional hilarity when the billing department asks for the term to start on the 15th of the month.

  • dwaz (unregistered) in reply to Bim Zively

C# doesn't have octal literals, so even if someone changed it to 015, it would just mean 15.

  • Bill T (unregistered)

The real WTF is that just about EVERY language starts off thinking that Date is a special case of DateTime, where you ignore the time portion. And that "pure" Date is usually an add-on library.

.Net finally added DateOnly and TimeOnly to the language.

I keep telling my colleagues that I hate time...

  • (nodebb) in reply to Anonymous') OR 1=1; DROP TABLE wtf; --

less-mild-WTF: allowing numbers to be specified in octal in a non-intuitive manner. I always hated that in C.

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/53458467/why-are-there-no-octal-literals-in-c

  • MRAB (unregistered) in reply to dpm

Python used to have the same kind of octal literals as C. That was fixed in Python 3, but now you can't have literals like 08 because there might be people you have moved from Python 2 and used such literals.

  • Argle (unregistered) in reply to dpm

I thought I submitted this as a WTF some time back, but here's the short version. I worked for a company that made shipping software. One day, one of the other programmers comes to tell me that he and another programmer were going nuts for days trying to figure out why our USPS rates were all off. He set a listing of the function in front of me. I took one look at the static array with the rates, and I asked, "why did you do all the numbers in octal?" He scowled and snatched the listing away. They had padded all figures with leading zeros to make it all look pretty. That year, by pure coincidence, no USPS first-class postage had the digits 8 or 9 or the problem would have become immediately obvious.

As a current uni student, it's hilarious and so baffling to me that the code editor that they probably used, didn't highlight the fact that the input to the function was unused. ("dateTime" is the actual input of type DateTime). Or maybe 'm thinking way too much, and this code existed long before code linting was a standard thing....
