I was totally following this oh-so-plausible story when I encountered the bit about "pushed it through CI". That's when my willing suspension of disbelief crashed and burned. There is no way in hell that Howard could countenance having a CI.

I know what Genesis needs for her New Year's resolution: "I will get a new job before January is out."

TRWTF is smoking cigarettes. Who does that anymore? Genesis should gift Alexa a vaping starting kit.

Is it just me or does it sort of... end abruptly? I expected Howard's solution to be some over-complex nonsense designed by someone with "19 years experience" but only 1 year experience 19 times and Genesis left dealing with an irate Alexa that the solution is garbage, which results in her saying f it she'll just keep doing it manually.

I thought this article was about me, but a half-eaten sandwich would not survive for more than a few minutes on my desk.

    You beat me to it.

Is this place set atop some dimensional gateway... "Alexa swung past the office. Walking in... Alexa was behind Howard's desk" Or maybe Alexis (who seems conspicuously prone to vice) was smoking more than just a cigarette, and dreamed up the Genesis for this tall tale.

In this case "Pushed it through CI" means "Copied the files from "C:/App/Customer/51236677/Working/Dev/No_Its_Prod/Copy of Test (15)/New/" to "C:/Prod/Clients/51232671/Final/Testing/Do_not_use/" and then ran one of the batch files sitting on the desktop.

I expected Genesis was going to walk in and find Alexa and Howard doing each other.

Why would fan fiction sites have payment processing? Any fan fiction asking for payment is likely to get hit with a cease and decist even faster than the free ones.

  • Naomi (unregistered) in reply to Holywhippet

There are ways to make it work, "pay what you want" models and perks that are technically your original IP are the big ones. The latter example is a major use case for Patreon, Ko-Fi, and similar services. (That is, assuming it isn't a joke in the anonymization.)

Depends on the original work and I imagine the business model. Some authors allow you to monetize fan fiction. Other works might be out of copyright and thus fair game. And on the business model side while the authors them self might be unable to make money off the derivative work directly the site it self can charge admission to readers and offer some alternative monetization method to the authors instead. That's why all those lore videos on youtube discussing clearly copyrighted works can still be monetized with impunity.

Mind you, I am an engineer not a lawyer.

It may have been, um, adult fanfic. That tends to get ignored by publishers.

They might as well be. They've fomefinged everything else in sight.
