Frist things frist ... we now leave room by reducing room by 16 characters? Or pixels? Is this what "leaving" room means? You remove room?

I suspect the getCcolumnSize returns how many characters or pixels wide the UI space is. They compute maxLen as that minus 16 units.

Then on some subsequent line we don't see, they trim the presentation of whatever data value to that length, thereby leaving 16 units of room before or after to decorate the value with whatever annotations or other insanity they desire.

The comment does, at least, seem to be getting ready to explain why we call that function in that way.

And it might be complete, in a slightly British(1), and definitely idiosyncratic, way. Previous comments talk about what the thing that needs room is, with this comment saying the equivalent of "leave some room for [[that stuff I just talked about.]]" (That is, the object of the preposition is completely implied.)

But it would have been better to finish the statement, and with something more direct and specific than "that stuff I just talked about".

    (1) The French sometimes say (in French, natch) something very similar.
