I am really glad you like it. However, I am not good person to create MFDs from scratch: I just can't draw. My comics would be simpler than xkcd. However, MFD comics are so inspiring, that I am finding it very fun to create my own dialogues for them :) Remember, MFD comics are not meant to be fun. They are meant to be inspiring for us. Making some of us laugh is just a side effect ;]

And I think that noone is going to kill themselves.

  • Bob (unregistered) in reply to Moss

I guess it's better than a crappy C&H cartoon. Well done for that.

  • (cs) in reply to Hobson

    Don't worry, I'm still here ;-)

The negative comments don't really bother me because, when you think about it, out of the thousands and thousands of people who view the comic (not just here, but in RSS feeds of the main site, etc) only about 30 unique people make the effort to stop by to say how much they don't like it. When they do, it's "your comic sucks" and nothing else constructive to say - you don't like it? That's your opinion and, if you can, I encourage you to re-do it better.

Also, I put my personal email on every comic - can you guess how many emails I've gotten? Only 3. One was "stop doing it, your comic sucks - btw, here's a link to my blog" the other two were well thought out criticisms by intelligent people.

Lastly, I really do have a good time doing the strip and look forward to seeing what readers do with it. Like everything else, MFD is a work in progress.

  • A Lurker (unregistered) in reply to Hobson

For the record, many of the rest of us lurkers also consider this to be painfully bad. The reason that criticism is held to a mere 30 people is that those seem to be the only ones who really want to put their criticisms of this comic's lack of humor or poor drawing into MS Paint to say it. Enable text comments and let's see where it takes us, eh?

So though you hold to the 30 people who continually post their frustrations, the are a pretty good representative sample of people like me, who visit TDWTF once a day and, while we all know exactly what it contains and have yet to laugh, click on it anyway. Perhaps because we continually are hoping for a farewell. Or at least an apology. Or, like a blind man at a target competition, perhaps MFD will get lucky... not yet, but that means it must be overdue.

Now I could go into extreme detail, spend an hour pointing out some exceptionally apparent flaws in drawing (missing digits, randomized limb locations, and lack of direction in drawing that suggests an artist who began without a clear plan and submitted his sketch as the final print), show you examples of jokes succeeding and failing, analyze what may in fact be the flattest characters in history of god-awful online web comics, but it has been done to death by people who can express their complaints better than I. Why bother repeating their (still oh so true) criticisms?

Anyway, I am happy for you that you enjoy the hobby. I don't want you to stop, and I would look forward to, several hundred panels of actual practice up the line, submitting again to an otherwise high quality site like this. But until then, MFD is a drag on the site.

    I lol'd, people stared.

  • Steve (unregistered) in reply to Steve

I have to admit the original is my single favorite "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoon of all time.

I laugh every time I see it.

Perfect setup. Perfect timing. Perfect punchline.

If I could draw half as well as Bill Watterson and had even a quarter of his comedic skills, I'd be an extremely happy man.

Dude, I haven't had one in ages. Maybe I should since everyone seems to be missing C&H. :P

  • Vermis (unregistered) in reply to Curtis Lassam

Crap! Put this artist in charge of MFD immediately! This single cartoon is better drawn and funnier than all of the real ones combined

well you can't have them, they're mine now.

I love the way A Lurker says he knows the opinions of people who haven't voiced their opinions, and it's unlikely that he has met them, certainly not most of them.

Someone with those sorts of power should rule the world!

  • A Lurker (unregistered) in reply to Hobson

I assumed that when his reader survey resulted in several hundred people claiming that they would rather kill themselves than see this comic on this site, I wasn't alone. I mean, only a third readers even rated it above negative or neutral.

Of course, they could have all been lying, the massive percentage of criticism towards this comic's flaws may have been me posting under different names, and my systematically intimidating the legions of fans from posting their gratitude could be responsible for the lack of support.

  • Evo (unregistered) in reply to Curtis Lassam

So seconded. I love, love, LOVE the drawing here!

  • Cringle (unregistered)
  • Evo (unregistered) in reply to Hobson

Now that was just harsh, lurker ;). And I have to disagree with you, MFD has been funny a few times. The drawings are getting better... I haven't seen flying body parts for a while (although the feet under the table on the left look a bit off and the guy behind seems to be missing feet :P). I would just like to see some unexpected punchlines. Currently, you can read the entire comic just by reading the first frame. And while humor may be hard to define, suddenly 'unexpected' is part of every definition.

    MY EYES!

  • (cs) in reply to bryan986

    baahaahaahaa... nicely done!

  • illtiz (unregistered) in reply to Hobson

Hurr, I think laziness is the number one reason for people not voicing their opinions. People are apparently more likely to overcome laziness in order to burn people online. Putting effort into stating that something is "OK" or "rather good" or even "nice and funny" is something I would expect to be far less satisfying to most people.

Survey results aside, I really don't think you can generalize the common sentiment of the textual comments and claim that most people are sure to hate the comic.

  • ukch (unregistered) in reply to Jasn

Not meaning to be pedantic, but since a black hole has no mass, can it really technically be called 'massive'?

    Captcha: venio

  • Iago (unregistered) in reply to Hobson

I like MFD. The actual comic is terrible, sure, but the comments are often hilarous, and they couldn't exist without a bad comic to hang off. And some of the Vikings comics are actually funny.

Please don't stop. The silent majority supports you!

  • MaDeR (unregistered) in reply to Jasn

    Blach holes DO have mass.
