I like this, I really do. The best comment so far was about the telephone exchange, and even that one didn't generalize into the (obvious) solution.

We're talking five figure hardware and software, but that's peanuts to its actual impact on the total project. Why not shell out the four figure sum to get a "hardened", aka "squaddie proof" portable rack enclosure? You can then also do things like add a surge arrester. You could do the same with the PABX and make it a combined roll-out, with a combined field manual. Or even fly someone out to do the initial installation.

But then, this is a developers' forum and the server is really just a desktop. So what does it cost if it breaks down and you have to re-install windows and the app from scratch, taking, oh, a couple of hours? For fun, also allow a few hours for acquiring local emergency hardware and the inevitable driver problems.

captcha: batman. Make of it what you will.

Someone in my uni went to the computing room in the middle of the night once, and stood on a chair and peed all over the pcs. Is that somehow relevant here?

I wish I could say I had never seen similar.... More importantly I really really really wish I could say I had not seen far far worse. :(

Hmm.. lets see... some construction worker drops his friends off at the pool... and he has LOTS of friends... toilet backs up... then explodes back into the little trailer bathroom.... yeah this is a GREAT place for a server... but at least they have a UPS on it. Most places don't even bother with that.. "WTF do we need a UPS for, thats expensive" :-)

At my previous job we had something kind of similar... the trailer was remote from the main building, so they ran fiber out to it. The media converter and switch were located in the women's bathroom. Granted, it was the women's so it was probably cleaner than the bathroom illustrated in this WTF, and the toilet was about 5 feet away, not right next to it, although the sink was... Never had problems, just had to make sure no one was in there before working on the network!

I had a customer in my field tech support days that had a radio station with about 5 cats running free inside. And where did the put the litter boxes?? Of course, right underneath the wall mounted cabinet that housed their LAN switches and patch panels! I hated that place...

Excuse me, but 'The consultant should bring a monitor, mouse and keyboard with him'

complete arse! servers will have a keyboard and mouse attached to them, and you borrow a monitor from nearby.

at least without a monitor, the mice can't try and hack in to surf for some porn.

This just a plainly stupid location for the server.

If its running windows, it'll need a patch shortly, well its in the right place for a download

I always thought having windows in a toilet is a bad idea!!

more crap jokes to follow no doubt!!!!

Actually, we had two servers in the male staff toilets (put in before I started working here), however the sinks were removed beforehand, and the toilet cubicle left locked, and the door to get into the place locked (only IT had the key too). It did get very warm in there though.

We now have them in a new building, in a purpose built server room with the rest of the servers.

It's definitely the men's room - toilet paper roll empty but not changed.

The only thing missing is resting the new/spare roll on top of the empty roll sideways.
