    Clipper didn't had the Select command. It was included only in FoxPro.

    Line Printers, weather band, chain, drum, OR dot matrix, all have unique sounds. I did a test on a chain printer that hit tall the elements in three steps. It taxed the power supply so bad that it took the printer off line!

    Those were the days!

    Apparently, after the open sourcing of the captcha algoritm, Alex has slightly changed the algoritm (heh). Let's see...

  • SeySayux (unregistered)

    The following algorithm change has taken place:

    if(!listOfApprovedCaptchas.contains(decodedText)) {
        return "I am brillant!";
    } else {
        return decodedText;
    }

    For the rest, the algoritm is indentical.

    TRWTF is so many people cannot understand the idea to be nice to each other without requiring payment.
    The only reason we are nice to others is that we expect reciprocation. Whether it's in the form of quid pro quo, karma, or reward in the afterlife, the root of all altruism is expectation of payback; in other words, selfishness.
    You are begging the question! (Textbook example)

    Actually, I'm stating my opinion.

    To clarify, begging the question is presenting a circular argument as proof. I was just saying the same thing twice- the second time to elaborate. However, since you seem like you want to argue, I'm pretty sure that for any given altruistic act, I could present a reasonable example of selfish motive for the act. Go.

    TRWTF was not charging for it, even if he was just fixing his own oversight.
    Exactly. He could say something like: "I've recently learned some cool techniques to optimize Clipper data access. I really think I could improve the performance of the application I wrote for you. Are you willing to hire me for a short contract?"

    Yeah, seriously, you worked your ass off to meet their requirements, and they pay you per hour to do that work. Why in God's name is it not worth more money for you to improve on it?

    Last time I checked, my landlord won't give me a bigger apartment for free.

    TRWTF is so many people cannot understand the idea to be nice to each other without requiring payment.

    Cool, be at my house this Saturday at 8PM to help with my kitchen re modeling I am doing.

    Clipper was a very nice language for its day, once one learned the nuances. I had a good book on it and a lint checker (Grok). It was possible to write stable, maintainable code in it. Not that I'd ever go back.

    Whenever Alex posts a Classic WTF, I go check out the original comments to see what the hivemind of yesteryear concluded. That being said, this comment sums it all up nicely.

    I thought the one right below it was an even better summary.

    Is it just me or are those comment numbers not even on those pages? o_O

    Didn't he recently bragged about receiving funding? I remember him screaming about becoming rich. I can't remember if any amounts have been mentioned, but they are probably thousands. Considering that shared hosting is 5-10 bucks per month, he's considered covered for life for hosting this. Now, his time for publishing content is another topic - however, he chose to do that hoping somebody big will eventually buy him out. Otherwise, don't fucking do it.

    Between Penguicon, SODEC, and an unusually hectic week at work prepping for a new release of BuildMaster, I didn't get a chance to do a new article today.
    Oh, well, I guess you don't see this website as a source of revenue for you. I've gone ahead and blocked the sidebar adds accordingly.

    it isn't free to run you know...

    Wow. I remember Clipper, back when I was an intern in 1988. A good language, although definitely strange by modern standards.

    I remember seeing the description of SET FILTER, along with its warning and very quickly learned to avoid it. By using indices and SEEK and other related mechanisms, I gained a nearly 100:1 speedup. Even though my databases only had a few hundred records, that was still a huge deal for code running on an 8MHz 286.

    Actually clipper still lives and has changed with the times. It's now an open source project called Harbour and xHarbour.
