Where is the software WTF? The system was stable enough to survive frequent power-cuts and even flooding... not typical material for this site.

The WTF is that the USA is such a third world country now they can't afford to keep power on all day for the freaking emergency response system!

  • Top Cod3r (unregistered)

OK, I know you all think this is a WTF because you have no designed a server room. It was wrong to drain the water out from the wiring area. Haven't you ever read anything about water cooling. They design it that way so the wires will stay cool and not overheat. The only WTF that I see here is that they let amateurs into the server room and it ended up costing them because they had to replace the equipment they damaged. Lesson learned.

Of course ... silly me. I thought it was absurd the moment I typed it.

What I really meant to type was:

Or, as Benjamin Franklin would say,

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."

More a propos, I think you'll agree. Memo to self: must take more care when cut'n'pasting out of (hawk, spit) Wikipedia.

Anyone who would spell Dennis with one "n" doesn't deserve recognition for a quote, anyway. Nevertheless, having no use whatsoever for a lighthouse, I am therefore forced to agree with Mr. Franklin.

Kings, priests, county officials ... it's all the same thing. Not a single one of them cares about what you do. Ever.

Why so much bigotry towards priests?

Have you ever even met a priest? If so, what did they do to you to inspire so much hatred? If there was really some wrong done, what gives you the right to judge all priests because of the actions of one?

In my experience, the vast majority of priests care a great deal about people, and what they do.

I don't think the facts back up your statements about kings or county officials either. Surely some only care about themselves, but every single one?

Am I the only person that did a double take on "downtown businesses that got their power turned off in the afternoons"? California businesses are OK with the electric company shutting down their power in the middle of the afternoon on a regular basis?

California is the land of the rolling blackout. It usually happens during the summer time when there isn't enough electricity available to serve the demand of everyone running their air conditioners.

I work at home, so when I moved here (San Francisco) I bought two good sized APC UPSes for my home systems. The alarms on my systems go off about once a week - usually due to a momentary power glitch. I'm sure the damage I've saved my three systems from has more than made up for the cost of the UPSes.

    Yes, I have.

    Grew up Catholic.

Catechism, First Communion, Confirmation, the whole bit, even actually seriously thought about taking Holy Orders (becoming a priest, for you non-Catholics). Learned to hate my body and fear sex.

Became an atheist during my father's funeral when I realized that I could substitute the words "mumbo jumbo" for the words the priest was saying and I would produce precisely the same effect.

It took me about thirty years to recover from the experience and even today I consider myself merely a Recovering Catholic. One day at a time, babe.

While I don't hate priests per se and would never endeavor to hurt one in any manner, I certainly have no respect for the claptrap they peddle.

The IT Crowd - Drop the Dead Donkey stopped way before the 118 directory enquiry debacle.

For non UK, that was when the government changed from the simple 192 number, to over 200 numbers starting with 118 (http://www.118tracker.com/118-providers.shtml).

If all you are saying is that you disagree with the teachings of the Catholic Church (or more precisely, what you heard some priests say, which isn't always the same as the teachings of the Church), then I have no problem with that. Personally, I think the teachings of the Church make more sense then any other religion I've ever studied (atheism included), but you don't have to agree with me.

I think it is entirely reasonable and proper for us to respectfully discuss what we believe and why.

The original poster that I replied to did no such thing. Hate-filled rantings and demonstratively false hyperbole are not part of a respectful discussion.

Isn't natural gas lighter than air? How could it "Flow Down" a parking ramp?
    Propane is 42 g per mol (22 l), compared to air's 29 g. Buthane is 56g per mol.

And neither of those have anything to do with natural gas which consists primarily of methane, weights 16g/mol and is indeed lighter than air.

    Hmm, after seing this porkie:

the gas was actually flowing down our parking ramp into the underground parking area next to our back door

I start to doubt the entire article. A gas main carries natural gas, which is not delivered as a liquid, rather than 'gas' as petrol is known in America.
