Probably not as much as I did when I followed the link to http://www.salmiyuck.com/ and, poking around there, found what at first appeared to be a post from Dec 2014. Turns out it was 2011 + a dirty monitor, but it made me wonder for a couple of seconds.

Hey, I heard it! I heard it! Plenty of people are around, and know how to find this page.

I am from Germany. Most german Lakritz is made of sugar-syrup. For good Lakritz we shop in the Netherlands. What happened to this year's reader survey?

    Welcome to The Scary Door.

Whereas Bethmännchen are indeed great (sigh, still more than six months til christmas...), if you don't like salmiaki things, the worst taste offender is probably Denmark, where they sprinkle salmiak on soft ice. And on soft mini cakes. It's probably what you would call an "aquired taste".

  • (disco)

That Tokyo meetup was a lot of fun.

    P.S. I'm not homeless!

I'm somewhat tempted to try to make my GreaseMonkey userscript load both threads and merge them into this format.

Not feeling quite that ambitious today, though. And I'm not sure how I'd have to handle the pagination/unpagination.

I thought the Scary Door is the one which leads to Discourse?

  • (disco)

Matthew's submission includes a "Monkeys first know".

Did that get run through a WTF translation script?

Looks like a Monkey's Fist Knot to me...

  • (disco)

@apapadimoulis So wait, real talk here. The opportunity to get a TDWTF mug is legit? Since it's been three years since the last Souvenir Potpourri I figured supplies were exhausted long ago. I will totally send ALL OF THE THINGS if I can get a mug out of it.

Filed under: wait does that make me a crazy person, I'm not a crazy person I just collect mugs

Worth it. I got one during the NewRelic promotion and it was my pride and joy for most of a year before I accidentally broke it during a move half-way across the country. They're amazing mugs and I am distraught that I cannot outright pay for a replacement.

Hidden maybe, but I doubt it's very "active". There seems to be a lot less article comments on days when it goes over there. Look at today, no new comments for 4 hours.

I ordered some MRE's off ebay awhile back and let me tell you: The crackers are the best thing ever. Super thick and crunchy.

    @apapadimoulis Yeah, where's more Salmiyuck?

Also, I have found one good Discourse feature. I navigated away from the thread by clicking on @apapadimoulis and it still had my reply box there. That's good design.

    Katjes was, indeed, Salmiyuck.

And no Salmiyuck review to go with it??

Oh well, time to find some cool stuff to throw in a package.

I'd say it's because none of the things that got sent were all that exciting. Except for that poster! I'd call that a really WTFy WTF.

But Discourse could probably a factor, too.

I had the rubber equivalent of the magic discs when growing up. Much easier when you can just invert them and wait.

It wasn't all that fun for me anymore; felt like I just kept writing the same things. I might revive it by doing video reviews with OTHER people. Maybe.

As cute as the 'send stuff to Alex' thing is, please just set up a store where we can buy TDWTF merch. There's the RWTF: insufficient monetisation!

My offering was indistinguishable from what Dr. Peter Kittel sent. Alex accidentally mixed the two together and the result is Discourse.

Here are the ingredients of Black Black gum:

    砂糖、水あめ、ぶどう糖、還元パラチノース、エリスリトール、カカオ抽出物、イチョウ葉抽出物、菊花抽出物、ガムベース、香料、軟化剤、着色料(カカオ、クチナシ)、カフェイン、甘味料(アスパルテーム・L-フェニルアラニン化合物)、ニコチン酸アミド、(原材料の一部にゼラチンを含む)

    カフェイン is caffeine.

ニコチン is nicotine. I'm not sure how to fully translate nicotine acid amid.

  • (disco)

Some readers I met at the Tokyo meet-up gave me these Japanese souvenirs; I wish I could remember which of you gave me what, but the night was a bit of a blur after I tried to win at Nomihodai.

Nobody ever "wins" nomihodai, unless you consider the bleary-eyed sense of shame and nausea you feel as old ladies give you disapproving looks on the 6am train home to be a prize of some kind. Pretty sure living in Tokyo in my 20s took a decade off my life...

BTW, if you haven't tried it, that Black-Black is nasty licorice-flavored gum w/nicotine in it. If you weren't already, going out in Tokyo made you a smoker by association anyway, so you might as well use the gum to quit!

I don't know what you're smoking (or if there is a subtle difference here in the gum), but I bought this from thinkgeek before, and it was tasty and had caffeine, not nicotine.

Google suggests that it's nicotinamide, C6H6N2O. It's one of the B vitamins, identical to niacin (C6NH5O2) except for having an -NH2 (amide) in place of the -OH (hydroxide) in niacin.

I'm not sure how you're supposed to warm that Magic Disk to 40°C/104°F when the hottest part of your body (the inside) is only 37°C/98.6°F.
