I don't think they want to let us see half finished pages while they are making some changes...

    Better a not-working topic than XXX.com!

Also, who would make a forum software called Discourse?

They were going to call it Intercourse, but then they realised that the connotations have changed a bit since Jane Austen's time and people might think it was pr0n.

Who would make a website named "XXX"?

I'm disappointed that this isn't resolved in the article. :(

And that’s why there are domains like example.org.

On an unrelated note, I still think the @PaulaBean stub post should not count as a “comment”.

    Well, I was curious.

sex.com would even be a better example as it was reserved for that same reason.

The emotion you're looking for isn't quite guilt: http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0029135/?ref_=tt_cl_t12

Bad things happen all the time. Here we use "private.lan.com" on a private network (self contained) that is shipped on a product. I pointed out that the Chilian national airline is "LAN", and they have a web site (wait for it) lan.com. The response: well it is a private network (like 192.168.xx.xx) and it won't be exposed, etc...

One of these days, it will blow up. I will add in further comments when it does. In the mean time life goes on.

If it were coded in C++ your friend wouldn't need to sign in to see your private topic.

Yes captcha, you selected the right one.

Evan aside from "including a random dummy url in something you distribute to the public without bothering to check if it's a real site and what might be there" and "not bothering to check with anybody before making changes to production" and in general "making changes to a production system when you have no idea what you're doing" ...

What did Otto expect to happen? If it was really a non-existent URL, then any customers who clicked on it would get an error page. Would that really be BETTER than getting a page that was undergoing revision? I would think that elementary rationality would have been to say to the programmers, "Hey, maybe we should have a page that says 'temporarily down' while you guys are working on the site".

  • (disco)

... not bothering to check with anybody before making changes to production...

This is one of my favourites. I had a guy's unexpected and undocumented code implementation get overwritten by my svn update. When we got to the bottom of the issue and I requested to be told when such changes needed to be made, I was told "but you deleted my changes". Doesn't get it.

Even just not bothering to check with anybody. There is a level of hell reserved for these people. For all eternity people irreparably overwrite their changes, and they end up fixing the same code over and over again.

  • (disco) in reply to dkf

For repentance, Otto should be forced to write a quicksort with fully featured unicode support... in GW-BASIC (if anybody still remembers this ancient interpreter from the days of MS-DOS).

  • (disco)

TRWTF is that clicking www.XXX.com in the article shows MLP pr0n instead of human pr0n. God help us, we've been hacked!

If it were coded in C++, we could simply #define Disclosure TDWTFComments

Shut up, that's how I actually learned the quicksort algorythm, by writing it in GW-BASIC. I still remember how great it felt afterwards to lay my hands on QBASIC, with all those subs and functions...

The picture is Bill Murray's masochist character from Little Shop of Horrors who goes to the sadist dentist. The facial expression is less guilt and more... anticipation.

I did not have Disclosure with that woman. She did the disclosing.

Discourse, on the other hand, sucked. And then spit.

Those captchas are clairvoyant. Last time it was genitus. This time it's decet. You think decet was involved in Disclosure?
