John W. needs more practice at anonymising screenshots.

    Also, well, you know....

Unfortunately the photo I took did come out well enough to send in, but...

The ATM at my bank has a new UI. Very pretty. And apparently using Chrome (or maybe Chromium), because the yellow banner at the top saying that Shockwave Flash had crashed was very familiar.

No, that's about right for a frist class train ticket these days.

I take it frist class travel from Cambridge to Manchester is only offered by Virgin Galactic.

Really? I think as long as we steer clear of joking about shooting them down or crashing we should be fine. Just because something bad has happened does not mean that all discussion of any related subject should be suspended for some arbitrary amount of time.

No problem. Used the opportunity to jump on the band waggon.

Anyway, What I came here for was to point out that TRWTF is UK train fairs... Oxford to Cambridge (100 miles) £70+ To put that into context, you can get a cheap flight to Cyprus for less.... http://www.skyscanner.net/news/80-flights-under-80

It worked out cheaper for me to hire a car and drive from Preston to Glasgow last year than to get a last minute train ticket... There's something just not right there if you ask me...

You should probably talk about sceond class to keep the numeric sequence going.

Definitely. You should have added *the other benefits, too*:
    • There are no leaves on the motorway.
    • If there is an accident, you can leave at the next junction and keep moving.
    • If your air condition collapses you can open the windows, but won't get dumped at the next station.
    • In winter there might be an equal chance of getting stuck for hours in a snow drift. But with a car, you can pack plenty of blankets, food and drink.
    • If you oversleep, no problem. You will just get there a bit later.
    • You don't have to use BVG trams to get to your transport first.

Can't do that, then *my* joke wouldn't work.

I've been visiting Berlin and in getting there, I traveled by tram. Based on these screenshots, I'm kind of amazed that we actually made it there.

Daef shouldn't worry. BVG is the underground. It's the "light railway" (S-Bahn) that has a reputation of being reliably unreliable ("verlässlich Unzuverlässlich").

Actually, it's not. Seems a first class ticket costs a few pennies short of £ 1,000,00.00.

According to Wikipedia a third-generation ICE train would be around 31 mio €, that's about 24.5 mio £. And that's just the train, you would have to add the cost of operation.

What is really strange is that there's an alternate image for Image #5 that I almost went with that was for an airplane crash where all aboard had died, but no injuries. I love poking the troll button with you guys, but maaaaybe not this time.

  • (disco) in reply to faoileag

That said, you can charter an entire train all day for ~£50k or lease and maintain an [older] train for a month for ~£8k.

  • (disco)

First class tickets cost that much because you get to sit at the front of the train and operate it. But they have regulations that say that unlicensed people can't be at the front. So you have to pay a lot of extra money to bribe officials to look the other way.

You used to have to do the bribing manually but they have automatic bribing services now that do the bribing for you.

What a time to be alive.

That’s because they have to spare a lot of room on the train for all the stands, rides, jugglers, mimes, and so on — not as many paying customers will fit on the train so they obviously have to raise fares.

Maybe it's a file whose complete filename is a single NULL character? Which error do you throw in that case?

  • (disco)

Fortunately, empty() and isset() both check this stuff for me. There are some times, though, that I explicitly use NULL because that's how I roll.

Filed under: I don't think PHP's null is as null as NULL.

Obviously not FILE_NOT_FOUND. There must be plenty of files without filenames on the hard disk. I mean, all those magnetic bis are already there. They just haven't been assigned any filenames yet.

Seems like it. The number of replies on Discourse is growing. Now that's a giant WTF.

I don't usually even bother to head over to Discourse and see what people are posting. I've modified my Greasemonkey script so that if it finds Discourse links for the story comments, it changes them all to point back here so this is my default location, and it adds a "Discourse" link that points to the original comment link target if I do want to head over there and see what's happening.
