It's only a pity that your state is a required field and it only contains US states making it impossible to fill in this form.

Companies really need to learn to handle non local submissions. I recall reading that the Symantec order page requires a 5 digit postal code making it impossible to buy Norton from the Netherlands where either your form is rejected or your packet is delivered to the wrong address. Not that I mind very much not being able to buy Norton though.

How many people outside of the US (our even outside of Georgia) are really planning to donate to the Atlanta Botanical Garden?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are probably a lot of legal hurdles a charity has to go through to accept foreign donations. Its probably not worth it for them to go through all that just to support the very remote possibility of someone outside of the country wanting to give a donation. Hell even if the only work needed was to tweak the infrastructure to accept things like non-US states, that alone would probably be too much work for something that remote.

Though they do allow you to select different countries...

  • (cs)

It seems to be somewhat better now - at least the Sith Lord parts and the like. A pity. "Flower Goddess" seemed rather appropriate.

I wonder if you could munge your POST and get it to still work. =)

The British Airways site is not very much less demented than this one, and it was obviously set up purposely. I think "Wg Cdr" is rather a snub though... how many people would know that means "Wing Commander"?

  • hexatron (unregistered)

I looked at the Atlanta Botanic Garden 'join' page. NO SITH LORDS! You are limited to the following titles: Admiral Ambassador Capt. Cmdr. Coach Col. Commissionner Council Member Dr. Father General Governor Judge Lt. Lt. Col. Madam Major Major General Master Miss Mr. Mrs. Ms. President Prof. Rabbi Senator Sir State Rep. The Honorable The Reverend Rev. Congressman The Late Ambassador The Late Secretary of State Reverend Monsignor Pastor Consul General Consul Cantor Mr Reverend

It's nice that you have a choice of Mr or Mr. (with and without the dot), though I believe Late Ambassadors are not joiners. As for the Late Secretary of State--that's just in poor taste.

The states dropdown has the Australian states in it as well (all the three-letter ones) :P.

It's obvious that the entries in the pulldown field was not pre-defined but just a SELECT * operation from existing data.

But having a title of 'sith lord' does sound appealing...

  • YourMom (unregistered)

This seems fake to me. If you google and wander to the real donation page, these titles are NOT there (unless it was fixed), but to me this is nothing more than element manipulation via javascript injection, and a poor one at that LAME.

Maybe I'll add "Super Penis Man" to that dropdown and take a screenshot of it so I'll be cool too.

And Canada - BC, AB, SK... heck, they have Nunavut! Though, technically, it should be State/Province/Territory.

I'll have to keep this in mind the next time I need to setup a donation thing. Perhaps appealing to pop-culture fans pays off - star wars, star trek, etc. Appear on WTF ans Slashdot and friends.

The "donate online" page shows this, to me:
You are attempting to access this Web server from a blocked IP address.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but evidence suggests the IP address may be associated with fraudulent activity. Unfortunately, in our efforts to counter online fraud, we may inadvertently reject legitimate IP addresses.

This mean that they trust Sith Lords but they don't trust me?

If anything, this is even more screwy than the Selecta-Dropdown of the OP.

What it actually means is that they won't accept donations from online fraudsters. Bush and Blair accepted donations from Enron executives and dodgy steel magnates respectively; are Atlanta Botanical Gardens saying that what's good for politicians isn't good for them?

    Hmmm. Possibly so.

As an aside, I do recommend going to the ABG. That, Stone Mountain, and the Martin Luther King memorial are about the only things in Atlanta worth going to.

    Tourists maybe ....

And as for legal hurdles, I wouldn't that there are more for international compared to US donations. Kinda hard to get the donation accepted for deduction in your resident/origin country for tax deduction, though ....

Interestingly, if you convert the combo to a text field, you can enter your own title and it will save it. However it will no longer appear in the drop down list.

This supports the idea that it used to be a free form text field instead of a combo.

I've created an account that had the title "Sith Lord":

    Username: blahblah Password: blahblah

I highly doubt this is the case, as we actually use up to nine digits in the USA. I am also certain that they ship to Canada, which uses six alphanumerics.

I'm still wondering whether the British Airways one counts as a bigger WTF simply because it's quite clear that someone thought about it and made a deliberate choice to include all of those titles in there. There are only a couple of dozen people worldwide that can actually claim the title His/Her Majesty or His Holiness - how many of them not only fly British Airways but register themselves to receive special offers by email?

Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands: Hey Lizzie, did you see that special British Airways offer? We could go skiing in Canada next week and save ten percent on air fares.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of Papua New Guinea (and a few other countries): Oooh Beattie we do like the sound of that. Maybe Benny could come along too.

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI: Very kind of you, but I'm visiting Malaysia and Thailand for a fortnight. Singapore Airlines' offer had three nights of free accommodation.

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine of the Galactic Empire: The site won't let me register. Your arrogance blinds you, British Airways. Now you will experience the full power of the dark side. Unleashes Sith Lightning

No, it just means that he/she didn't turn up on time. Typical of Americans, if you ask me. (See World War One, World War Two, etc. Pay particular attention to the second Gulf War, where the American army actually managed to turn up twice, with a twelve year gap, and still not have a plan as to what to do next.)

Either that, or they're of mixed race. Oh, sorry, that wasn't "latte," was it? Difficult to tell with the spelling on this site.

There have been a lot of comments about the "Late" titles....what about people who want to attempt to make a donation on behalf of someone's estate? I assume that this must have happened at one point...why else leave those options there when cleaning up the list?

That seems logical to me anyway...of course, I guess they probably wouldn't want to register the deceased for all the coming junk mail these forms usually precede. Maybe its a "better them then me" kinda thing?
