...of course, had they just written the date properly "19 Sep 09", even a lack of spaces would still give a clear, unambiguous BBdate.

    September 9th, 19 AD?

  • Original Idea (unregistered)

Hey I just thought of a brillant idea -- it might not be September of 1909; it might be September 19 of '09 -- that is, 2009. TRWTF is that no one thought of that earlier.

  • Bob... Billy Bob (unregistered)

    Hey guys,

The expiry date of that bag of peas is really September 19th, 2009.

Just thought I'd clear that up for everybody since there seems to be a lot of confusion here.

TRWTF is that Vista has decided to change the classic

    "Abort, Retry, Ignore"

    to

    "Cancel, Try Again, Continue"

That's because all three in the first group are so downbeat and negative (abort! retry! ignore!), and other three are more upbeat and positive.

    Tech newspeak for you.

  • Deiwos (unregistered)

Believe me, I have read through every comment and I can't believe NO ONE has noticed the glaring error with this WTF!

The date on the peas is ACTUALLY September 19, 2009 ('09') rather than 1909. It's just that there is a space missing between the dd and yy fields.

How could ANYONE have missed this? It is lucky I got here in time to sort this mess out, who knows what might have happened if I commented any later.

    Who says thats a bug?

    SEP 1909 = 19th September 2009

No, it's not rocket science. But rocket scientists are usually intelligent and highly educated while any kid who has played a few video games can get a job as a programmer.

Not really a bug - alot of products are printed only with the Month, Day, and 2-digit year - and the systems are designed that way on purpose.

In the example provided, the Exp date is September 19th, 2009 (SEP 1909). It would behoove them to put another space between the "19" and the "09".

Except it's not. Its saying "Sell by 19th of September 2009". Don't forget that sell-by dates are always a DATE, not a month.

    Mii:
The "Windows - No Disk" error is actually a virus/trojan.. you might want to run a virus scan...

    Er... No, it isn't.

This dialog is caused by calling some MFC function (like GetDiskFreeSpaceEx()) on a volume when there is no physical media in the volume. That is, whenever you see this dialog, it means you are running a program or service that, as part of its functionality, wants to access volumes but that was not tested with empty volumes. (Otherwise, the programmers would've presumably fixed this bug.)

Last we checked, this issue has been somewhat acknowledged by Microsoft but they don't seem intent on fixing it. They think it's OK for function calls to pop inane dialog boxes as a side effect. (The workaround is to call SetErrorMode(SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS), but that sucks ass for us because that affects the whole process.)

Many programs are/were causing this issue, like some anti-virus software and even iTunes. It is not a stretch to imagine that a virus could also cause this dialog to appear but it's not the sole cause.

  • Anonymous Coward (unregistered) in reply to Anders Hesselbom

    It's actually Sep 19 09 (2009). It's missing a space, that's all.

What millennium bug? Sep 19th '09

  • Americanadian (unregistered) in reply to Just Another WTF

Actually, it is Inuktitut. the four symbols put together in that order spell "nu - na - vu - t." What's that spell? The newest Canadian territory. Cross-reference it with the Inuktitut symbol chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Inuktitut.svg

    The alphabet is missing 'W'.
