Is there a specific number of "a"s that forces a new line?  They don't seem to have the same number from line to line.

I think they probably used server-side GDI methods to calculate the width of the string, given the font face and size, and then programmatically built the string of "a"s to the appropriate length.

Uh, I really, REALLY disagree. If this was server-side, the programmer should be SHOT IMMEDIATELY. The method you describe requires intelligence. No one with the smallest amount of intelligence would use strings of text to break a line.

This HAD to be a wysiwyg editor. Besides, the lines with single a's should prove that. The reason the number of a's are different is because the fonts are not monospaced.
The real WTF is that people in this forum aren't explicitly delimiting sarcasm with the requisite sarcasm tags.

But it is so obvious to the poster that he is being sarcastic that only a complete idiot would fail to recognize it when reading the text.

When I first learned about HTML in school, we were instructed to use FrontPage and "never click the HTML tab because it will confuse you" (I was 8 at the time).

Sweet mother Mary, now I feel old... when I was 8, my computer experience consisted of "Oregon Trail" on an Apple ][+

(cue the "when I was your age, all we had were 0's and 1's, and we liked it that way!" - "what, you had 1's? All we had were 0's back in my time" comments)

Don't mess with that, it's absolutely brillant!

All the people thinking it's fun or whatever to refer to 'brillant' (and there are a lot of you, not specifically  picking this one out) obvious don't get it. The wtf part behind Paula is that she did NOTHING at all and managed to stay on the job. No copy-past, not 'creative' combination of technologies, no language abuse, ... just nothing ...

Next time you refer to it, think about it for a moment, it makes you look stupid.

    </rant>

Just because _YOU_ don't think something is funny, doesn't make it so. I personally giggle, when someone posts a well thought-up "brillant"

Quite so. I think anyone who has been reading this site for any length of time understands what the real WTF behind the Paula - it is, as you said, the fact that she did absolutely nothing.

However, I disagree with the idea that the 'Brillant' mis-spell is not funny. It is, as it were, the icing on the cake. Although not always used appropriately, it can be quite funny when done well.

Does anyone else say it out loud whenever they encounter something really obtuse?

Co-worker: This function excecutes a query to get a result set, then iterates over all N records of that result set, executing a query in that loop just to get a count of some related records when COUNT( DISTINCT field1 ) and a LEFT JOIN would've worked in the first place. Me: Brillant! Co-worker: You wrote it. Me: Brillant!

    (To be fair, I was a n00b when I wrote it. )

Sarcasm tags are all well and good, but what we really need are Irony validation, since most people get it confused with Apophasis or something. How's this for an error message?

Not likely. The most I'll admit to is a better knowledge of Wikepedia and a chip on my shoulder from a classical education. My hope is that if I sufficiently amaze CS majors with 2500yo technical terms, they'll start using them as variable names.

What goes around comes around - as software engineers we love to intimidate non-technical people with jargon. How many times have we told them, "You can't do that, it violates DeMorgan's law! The FBI will investigate you! Not only that, it won't scale!"

Gee, doesn't he know he's only supposed to put a link to the page in his email, not copy & paste?

Isn't this the power of the net?

I mean what if their hours change?

I can tell you that having the information inside an email (versus a hyperlink) is infinitely more convenient when it comes to college stuff, at least for me.  What'll happen is, the website will change, or go offline temporarily, THE MOMENT you need to know their hours.  That kind of thing is much less likely to happen to my Gmail account.

     for those who dont know...
as a freshman.. the only form of "rah rah" type cheer you are "allowed" to do as a freshman is to raise your hands in the air and yell "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

      a sophmore can say "A-A-A-A-A"

      junior "A-Whoop!"

      seinor 'Whoop!"

    John Bigboote:
    "a" + "a"  = "<br>" for sufficiently large values of "a".

Hahahaha thank you for sharing that John ... very clever on SO many levels...
