The real WTF is that Joe used the fan as a clipboard while Cabe was in the server room. Joe could have driven Cabe slowly mad and then gotten a nice promotion which is usually the natural order of things...incompetence promoted to where it can madden the greatest number of people.

This reminds me of the guy that was seen exhaling his cigarette breath directly into the air filter so it wouldn't set off the smoke alarm in the computer room. Or was I dreaming that?

I was thinking something along the lines of excessive violence, but I suppose firing Joe will have to do.

One place I worked at had 'smokers corner' right below the external air conditioning unit for the server room. Managements solution to a cigarette smoke filled server room was to have a large air duct installed that went two floors from the air conditioning unit intake to the top of building. Then one spring the source of bird feathers in the server room was discovered to be nesting birds in the air duct. The air duct then had a grill installed at the intake. This server room was also one floor directly below the executive restroom. Every few months some MBA would cork up a toilet and the server room would end up with rather smelly yellow/brown water covering on the floor.

This isn't bob's computers. If you're paying a company like Sun or IBM to support your machines, and you have log evidence of a problem, they'll replace whatever they need to, usually on the same day.

What I don't understand is why didn't Cabe setup a motion sensitive webcam in the room? Just plug in any old USB camera to an existing server and install motion or ZoneMinder. Problem solved. Saved my ass plenty of times.

Also works equally well in a cubicle. If you have any Linux box sitting in your cube, running 24/7, do the same thing. You'd be surprised at the stuff it catches. I set mine to only run at off-hours to watch the cleaning crew.

  • justsomedude (unregistered) in reply to Satanicpuppy

Oh I understand that, and I understand the tech wouldn't handle that either, but there wasn't a problem with the mobo in the first place.

FTA it's not shutting down, it's just reach whatever threshold our tech friend set to trigger his pager, which surely isn't at the complete meltdown time (TM) temp.

He thought it was a temperature-related incident. Unless the camera recorded in infared, it wouldn't have detected temperature-related incidents. I understand the desire to be there. In addition to seeing anything odd, he could also listen, feel, and smell anything out of the ordinary.

And there's nothing creepy about watching the cleaning crew if you suspect they are doing something. A former co-worker caught a cleaning crew person making personal phone calls on his phone.

Am I the only one feeling sad because my pager doesn't play music, I have a choice of fast short beeps or slow long beeps.

On a related note I once had a problem with a new server room temperature alarm spiking at the same time every afternoon for a few minutes while all the internal server temperature remained the same. One day I was working late and noticed that as the sun set it would shine through the window on the sensor setting off the room alarm until the light was low enough to not shine in the window. I closed the shades and never had a problem again.

Personally, I'd stick a hood over the sensor (open at the sides) so that you wouldn't get paged the next time someone opened the blinds.

But he was getting reports of a temperature alarm. They started out infrequent and increased in frequency. That may reflect a failing temperature sensor.

I don't see a WTF with replacing the motherboard in that instance.

The real worlds most expensive.. well, Notebook.

I know this guy who bought this really expensive Tablet PC. Top of the shelf, no expenses spared. He just insisted, he absolutely needs a Tablet PC.

Later I found out why: While all his correspondence (including e-mail) was handled by his secretary, he needed something to communicate with the secretary.

So he had his Tablet PC with Windows Journal or something similar running, where he wrote notes that he then printed out, and passed to the secretary.

And while an analog notebook (that is, a paper one) would have been lighter, easier (and cheaper), it was just sooo much cooler this way.
