The Real WTF is the GAWD AWFUL writing style of this article. Seriously, if you're going to embellish a story make some effort to have a fluid writing style. This is rubbish.

it could be worse. you could end up with what we, until recently, had -- a cron job that cleans up those old builds. and, also, deletes the build that's in production.

The part of the story they don't mention is Tim went on to help found a start up which managed to catch a big account and continued to barely function in his new position. He now leases new cars every other month and relies on a battery of underpaid, desperate new grads that leave within three years of starting. Then he started eating babies and sacrificing their parents to Satan.

Moral of the story? Being bad at your job leads to hell.

Eh, I thought that it was an interesting enough read. OTOH, it's gotta be fiction. Why would Tim be so useless? Four hours to come up with a plan to delete some files? He can obviously use the find command, and knows what nice does...

I think it's more likely that the firing squad needed someone to shoot, NOW, and Darrel was under the radar.

It's neither a bug nor a feature, it is something that we professionals refer to as "correctly implementing the specification". That hardly counts as a "feature" and it sure as hell isn't a bug.

But either way, kudos to Remy for breaking TDWTF.

    Dear Remy,

In case you haven't noticed, this is a grown-up place. The fact that you insist on using invalid html clearly shows that you are too young and too stupid to be writing stories.

Nice try but real frits is condescending and funny. You only fulfil half of this equation. He also knows more than 6 words.

I gotta say, this is the most successful attempt at real writing I've seen on this in a while. You can tell Remy spent all week working on it - and not just because of the dearth of postings last week.

Well, except that the syntax of English isn't formally specified and parser implementations have much more slop tolerance built into them, even if they sometimes insist on acting like dicks about minor problems that don't affect intelligibility.

I disagree. There are way too many words for how little story there is here, and what's worse is that it reads like two stories smashed together at high speed. "Brevity is the soul of wit," but organization helps too.

Didn't break my browser. But then I checked the source, and the comment had been fixed. Never realized that Remy's articles included "hidden" HTML comments.

I kinda like the way he stretches it out. When you don't have a lot of material, taking the long way around can work for you. Turns an anecdote into a story.

Question, why all the hate on the TDWTF people lately? They're doing this in their free time so you can have some bit of enjoyment. This is completely out of hand, you're being abusive and intolerant of a free service. Can't handle a typo or two? Leave! Nobody wants you here anyway. Everyone should know if this is directed to them.

If you don't want to gain any enjoyment and you just want to be a worthless jerk, then go away.

You forgot to add "implementing policies that will surely fill up that space in record time". ;)

Also, if I get a higher-up to scream at me "You have four hours", I will interpret this as 4 hours to get SOMETHING done. Also, I would watch exactly my wording while speaking to the head honchos. Get to the real point with the fewest words possible, as it is very likely that you will be interrupted mid-sentence.

Which might even be bad for you if you made a poor choice for your first words. Like "The filesystem's gone, but we have a backup from 10 minutes ago".
