Seriously, that looks to me like someone just wanted a quick and cheap something-something-darkside. Perhaps the second offsite backup of not-really-critical data?

I was just impressed by the WoodServer! Lovelovelove!

I count at least 4 dangling ends in this picture.
There are so many dangling ends in picture #4 because we either don't know where the other ends go, or the cables themselves are dead/damaged but so tightly entangled in the rest of the mass that we can't remove them.
  • Chad (unregistered) in reply to Ray

A Rack mounted server with decent spec = $5kish The same thing in desktop $500 Seems like a value rack mount... so long as you dont need to certify your server room shouldn't become an issue.

Captcha: facilisis - The infection of your server room by hand made rack mount servers...

You're paying too much for your low end servers. I doubt the object we're looking at performs more than a low end server.

That's what side cutters are for. Who hasn't enjoyed going at a tangle of production cables with a really big, sharp side cutter?

Heaven protect me from having to acquire the skills to see the disconnected cable in that mass.

I can see at least 3 others. two green and a blue.

Exactly my thoughts when a computer comes my way with 2 Maxtor drives in it!

Also, the drives in the image are PATA, but who's counting?

FYI, it is a 4-port Linksys switch, not an 8-port.

I picked up a few phrase during summertime trips to Colonial Trolliamsberg in my youth. Unfortunately, I think it would be more than a language barrier that contributes to communication issues.

hah, at closer inspection, there are actually several cables unplugged :) One being the blue one about a foot above the one circled...another on the upper right side too...and...

Maybe that is why they eliminated the case? It just gets in the way when they have to replace an internal hardrive?

My theory is that since the poster did not know what it is for, that a hacker (or government agency) put that in place to steal all of the data to and from a near-by server. "Man in the middle" has to go somewhere and proximity to the server gives you the best view. Heck, it might have a few wires connected a few racks away if it is a co-loc. The wooden table makes it look harmless so that no one pays any attention to it. Hidden in plain sight.

That fourth picture is beautiful! Just look at the Picasso like design of the cabling. The creator of that should be praised and this piece should hang in a gallery right beside that urinal that Marcel Duchamp signed.

  • Mike (unregistered) in reply to Alex

I see about 5-6 other unplugged cables there
